I had thought there might be some issues so did a trial run to see if I could get into auction 8, even though I did not actually bid. Evidently the electronics remembered that I had bid with them before so experienced no grief. I guess you will have powder dry for tomorrow? No Love in the Brit section, but I bid on a couple of lesser bits in the British Honduras section - proofs there from Vick through G5 all basically went for 4k+ & left them alone. I had always wanted the 1913, but after winning the currency 12H did not have the steam to go 1500 plus the juice for what is a nice piece but not exceptional. Had to go high for a couple of the late date currency bits (esp the 1960 25c currency which is a BEAR) to find fully uncirculated.

Was that the sale just past? Good, as I would have been bidding on the '37 for sure...PM me if you like as I am interested as to what it went for? I am starting to think rarity for proof Vicky Groats is something like from most to least rare and based on the last 20 years or so: 1857>1837>1838>1862>1853>1842>>1839

When actual oxidation sets in, copper nickel is VERY hard to "adjust" with cleaning. I have a very valuable half crown that has what appears to be a couple of spots that look to be secondary to fingerprints many years ago. Previously I had some luck (and even a little on this one) by diluting ammonia 1:1 with water and lightly tamping the surface with softened/soaked cotton buds. Very problematic

IMO, I don't like either of those and the "3" in date with even more corruption. I just can't get my eye to follow the truncated curve of whatever is descending from the crossbar of the 7, and come to either a 6 or broken 8. I could almost make the unlikely case of a broken 0 as well. I don't know, I think the null hypothesis is that it isn't anything [but a diebreak(s)] with bits of loss and loss of defined edges to the datals.

OK, I'll take a stab at 1500-2k quid. And I like this in matte, IMO quite a nicely done depiction of a man not necessarily handsome...

Yes, the RM do step down to such levels. I think the Reverse proof Britannias in "sets" from this year and last are further examples. I can scarcely believe that they are cranking out children's fairy tale coins complete with colour transfers, even in precious metals and that people are snapping them up!

No such date on the groat, and you needn't worry about putting that one up for sale. I can't imagine why someone would create such....

Hmm, I'm having a look at ESC - both the latest Bull version and the earlier Rayner & Davies for good measure: none have such a listing. A picture would be of enormous help as there is always the possibility of there being a new discovery, however unlikely. I am quite the fan of this denomination and so have been looking at them for a good long while and have never seen or heard of such.

Just wondering how their sale was going yesterday and today, and also what the atmosphere of the London show in general was. How enthusiastic was the bidding? As always, I like to follow the Victorian silver. On a personal note, have to say I was "targeting" one of the sixpences......

In a few years these will show up in bulk lots at mere fractions of the prices - especially the latter! Hopefully the lessons learned (?!) by the buyers will serve them well and not discourage them from the world of coins.

Believe that an 1886 that is hard to look at. Also, Vick was not a "lock" for queen, let alone the actual one in 1836! Now, if it was a nicely preserved 1837, that would be a different affair....

I love the denomination as said, but can tell you no rare dates there. Still, nice to have a bit of gold. Rough gold content is about two ounces, or a little less.

Do you have dates or pictures? I collect this denomination avidly but stick to the higher grade pieces....

Are you near to a University? They have spectroscopy machines that will give you an alloy readout. Also, there are some companies that make XRF hand held devices that will also give it to you - sometimes jewelers have them (I've been trying to find them around here in MD, USA without success). I have one of each type I think but not sure where they are. Allegedly, and according to Groom, the Sterling examples have sharper margins to the E's as was stated just above which is what mine had by recall. I'll see if I can locate these after work today. If you PM me email I will send them to you. As a footnote, I have many times seen written that a finer (higher percentage) silver coin will have a "duller" ring when rapped than a more base example. I personally have found that NOT to be the case. A better silver piece when dropped has a much clearer ring, almost as a bell, than the dull thud of a lower fineness or base example. That would demonstrate a higher pitch.

Yes, nice there. For some reason I like this coin & have about 4 or 5 of the ordinary proofs (well, plus the Norweb matte. LOL).

Not a coin as per above with only nominal (IMO) value to some collectors as a guinea weight. None for me though....

Somewhere I have a '22 with a die crack forming twixt tines of the trident....
