  1. Thanks for your input John, on that note I will put it back where I got it from for now until another day. On another note, how long ago was it since you left the force? I cannot remember how long ago it was we last spoke about that.... however I have still managed to stay in the recruitment process but things are taking forever with the finance cuts.... Mat 2 years 8 months and 17 days but I'm not counting If I was still in I would still have 11 years, 11 months and 10 days to do. According to my former colleagues the job is going from bad to worse, someones got to do it though! Hang in there Mat and I'm sure it'll all pan out in the end. I hope so! Got my A/C tomorrow with fitness test, if I pass then just final interview to go. I still think your crazy for leaving after everyone in my position is trying so hard to get in, but maybe if I get in I will tell a different story after 15 years! If I pass my A/C tomorrow, would you mind if I picked your brains on a few things in prep for final interview? I was a practical cop that used discretion and common sense Mat, I didn't fit in with the modern "service". A mobile ticket machine was more the order of the day for my bonus seeking senior officers. It was a good job, good pay and some good colleagues, but it was spoilt by the imbeciles above the rank of Inspector (and even some of them were tits). Feel free to speak to me, although my last interview was 11 years ago for traffic. If you do get in (and I hope you do if you want it that badly), don't forget where you came from. Treat people the way you would want to be treat yourself, stand by your decisions and never back down from a confrontation or leave a colleague in the shite. If you can manage all of that you won't go far wrong.
  2. Applicants can pick five universities to apply to. I think each of her choices has a good reputation and offers positives. Oxford has the advantage of being known worldwide, handy as she's doing languages and wants to travel. Plus accomodation is cheap(er)! Personally, I liked Nottingham as they seem to have thought more about how to arrange the year abroad and charge less for it. But in the end it has to be somewhere she feels comfortable, I guess and the few days spent at interview will give her a chance to find out a bit more from current students. My daughter finished at Nottingham last year and I know a few others who also went there - all spoke enthusiastically of their time there, but all were into medicine or sciences. I don't know any of her former schoolfriends who did languages, so wouldn't like to offer an opinion, but as long as they are red brick universities she'll be ok. I have a nephew who recently studied linguistics at Oxford (Hertford). Whilst It comes down to college and course, Oxbridge (live Harvard, Yale etc.) still have the name and reputation which carries so much weight, particularly overseas Does not do any harm if you fancy working for MI6 either. Apparently if you don't have a degree (especially an oxbridge version) you are far too thick to work in the intelligence service
  3. Really ? Even old, long since demonetised ones ? Never knew that. It's not true. The Coinage Act of 1971 says: "10.1 No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin which is for the time being current in the United Kingdom or which, having been current there, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so" Please don't Nick, poor old Peck will have a melt down if this one starts again I know, I know. I thought long and hard before posting, but maybe he has forgotten. Forgotten? I don't think either he or his therapist will forget the anguish that that particular little discussion caused. I'm not an idiot and it left me with pants on head, pencils in nostrils and uttering "wibble"..........................

  5. Definitely not the open 3 Mat. The central arm points way below the base (the open 3 points at the centre) of the 6. It isn't a slender 3 either. Condition is a killer even if it was something undiscovered it is just too bad to try to ID a die variety from.
  6. Ahhh were the 48 yours I bought from London coins? If so you let me have them at a reasonable price!! No I had already disperesed of mine then, I think they must have been another part from the same hoard....I was tempted Matt Put an advert in Coin News for "1825 UNC farthings wanted...will pay £100 each" let this run a few months then drop a load at auction. I didn't know that you used to be a double glazing/used car/kirby cleaner salesman Peter.

  8. Too dire to call Mat.
  9. I can offer you a 10% commission rate in auction if there is a decent amount. The next auction will be in April if you can wait that long. If you need to discuss it you can find my contact details via my web link. John.
  10. You were right in one part of your post Dave, GUIDE It does not matter what Spink quote, up, down or the same, it's only worth what you or somebody else will pay
  11. I would have thought so. Weight is usually a good guide to whether a coin is 'dodgy' or not but as forgers become more sophisticated the weights will approach the correct values, so not a 100% guarantee but a reasonable guide. Thanks for that, just picked up a currency 1839 at a reasonable price. It ticks all the right boxes for being genuine, I analysed it for about 2 hours against 4 other currency pictures I found on the net so all is looking good! Depending on what you have paid for it you could submit it to Robert Matthews for authentication.
  12. I can do a valuation for you and dispose of via auction if you wish. Contact details are on my website or message via the forum. John.
  13. I can never see the point of all those sellers who put 'happy bidding' on their listing. Wtf does that actually mean? I'm only happy when I've won something, preferably cheaply, so too much bidding would make me unhappy! Unfortunately Dave I'm only happy when I have sold something, preferably for an absurdly high price, needless to say I am usually a right miserable git.
  14. The postage is worth more than the coin At least the seller is honest in that they haven't a clue what it is rather than make up some amazing tail about how it belonged to Atila the Hun's great grandmother who passed it the Edward VIII on her death bed and said it that will bring good luck to anyone who clenches it between their butt cheaks whilst singing the first two verses of the La Marseillaise. Anybody who tells that story is talking total garbage, I know that for a fact because that is one of the coins that I am selling..........
  15. It makes sense for room bids to take precedence as the house is paid and gets the goods cleared on the day, BUT, it would take an exceptionally clever auctioneeer to know what point to start taking the bidding against the book to ensure the room wins the lot at the top book price. The practice that really "boils my urine" is the frightfiully nice chap on the rostrum saying "one more might get it" to the room. He is supposed to act on behalf of the proxy bidder and obtain the lot at the lowest possible price for them (it is in all of their T&C's)
  16. I am hopeless at multi-quote/reply so I'll take a stab at the old fashioned way; Peter; In my lottery winning dreams Dave; Too late for the banks o' the Tay, season CLOSED Colin; I am far from sane and probably shouldn't be let out of the house alone Hus/Richard; A pain in the pocket rather than the posterior! Everybody else; Ta muchly! The wee man has had a dose of croup and then "hand, foot and mouth" and no it's nowt to do with cows or other livestock (which is what my wife thought! My better half has suffered major problems with the pregnancy of the next bambino (due in January) that nearly resulted in an emergency section at 26 weeks and a trip over to Newcastle for special baby unit care. Thankfully that has settled down now and touch wood (yes my hand is on my head at this point) we should make it through to January and a healthy natural birth. I have had weeks of packing/unpacking and losing/finding things I didn't even know I had and have even managed to turn 43 in the intervening period without going totally grey/bald/demented. Anyway alls well that ends well.......
  17. Hello All, Following a recent house move and various health problems with my wife and wee boy I am back again. I have been without broadband for 3 weeks so my business has been neglected, but I am trading again! On a separate matter the next PFK catalogue is online now and can be viewed via the link below; http://www.pfkauctions.co.uk/ John.
  18. It just looks the 8 has been re-punched Steve and it has been punched slightly lower than the original. The first and most obvious thing to strike you is the lack of WW from the truncation. For the die to be an earlier date than 1858 these initials must be there.
  19. Oh go on John, lets have his name Dave my customer service may be disgracefully disgustingly appalling, BUT, my discretion is absolute. The muppet shall remain nameless.
  20. Not strictly speaking a laugh, BUT, this is an unsolicited email I received from some tosser who has never purchased from me...... No wonder people hassle you for F/B with your attitude - who would want to buy anything from you - you offer rudeness and parthetic customer service as shown by your own ad. Never seen anything like it before - What sort of business person has this attitude - one that most people will stay clear of I'd reckon Quite a successful one actually! Well I can safely say he will be staying well clear of me as he is now blocked!
  21. Ah! Now I know why you settled in Whitehaven
  22. BP does not appear on the reverse of the veiled heads. Marsh has the mintage at 130,000 and rates it as Rare. I'm with Peter and would say it has a value at only a little over bullion due to condition. Halves are not nearly as well collected as Fulls and this reflects in the prices made by mediocre pieces that are rare.
  23. I seem to have got stubbornly stuck at nEF with them (EF for Type 2). I buy any that look like they might nudge that up by a fraction of a grade. I often wonder what I'd pay for a genuine UNC if one ever came up. In 2009 Spink thrust the price up from £15 to £75. I was never sure if it was a misprint or not. But then again, they seem to do that for all modern coins where the year ends in the same as the catalogue year. In 2001 for example, all 1951 coins shot through the roof, crowns doubling from £10 to £20. I haven't seen the price since - can anyone confirm what the current 1959S Spink value is? A jaw dropping £85 in UNC yet only £10 in EF. A multiple of 8.5 in grade from EF to UNC is bizarre?
