  1. Reminds me of a Woody Allen quote- "I'm not afraid of dying, I'd just rather not be there when it happens"
  2. Err, yes. I think old Gollum should maybe take a trip down to the Styx instead and ask the ferryman if he could have some of his swaps.......
  3. I hates them I does, then again thats not news to most on here. The only point I would like to make is that it is not known what the long term result of storage in slabs will be (as was raised in one of our other debates on the subject), leading to one US slabbing company hastily arranging a simulation to find out if it is indeed safe storage........ Don't forget that there used to be adverts telling people that "WOODBINES ARE GOOD FOR YOU" before the effects of cigarette smoke was studied.
  4. The lettering is best described as Gothic revival and will be mid late Victorian. I agree with Peck and go for VH, you can of course call it MA if you invert it, but that would depend on what your own initials were
  5. Yes there are Calvin, but they aint Billy and Mary. It's certainly some type of evasion but, unless anybody on here has more knowledge/experience than me, it would be impossible to pin it down. ??? One, surely - it's too central on the flan to be two. Where's the second head? Tromp loi? Yep there is 1 that looks like 2 when you're looking for them. I guess I saw what I was told there was present? Regardless of central position on the flan I think the GIVS I gives it away as a George III coin?
  6. Having spent a lot of cash on a James rarity via ebay some years ago it was more than a little f****g annoying to find a rather messy corroded piece of a few hundred pounds in the coin cabinet tray when I opened it a year later. Tin pest, soil/Thames find and no conservation spring to mind. A very costly lesson that I will not be repeating.
  7. Just looks like a bog standard grotty British tin farthing to me Dave. The reverse legend is NOT Hibernia but is Britannia by the looks of it.

  9. Another evasion piece by the look of it and nothing to do with Billy and Mary. Condition means it's too hard to pin down though.
  10. It is actually British. It's an evasion halfpenny. Galata437. Obv; S.r BEVOIS SOUTHAMPTON Rev; *NORTH**WALES*

  12. I'm sure Rob will be interested as he plans on updating Davies at some point.
  13. Azdas wallet It looks like it could be a planchet flaw or post mint damage, I would go with planchet flaw because it has that flaked look Azda's sporran surely. No they only use sporrans when they're wearing their skirts Peter. Wallets are the every day issue for them. Usually with waterproof ziplok fastenings and a titanium carbide outer casing with double tig welding to stop them from accidentally falling open, say whilst standing at a bar in a group for example
  14. No. A die crack would show as a raised area on the coin rather than a depression. Anything that is recessed is either caused by a foreign body caught between the die and the planchet (grease/dirt/Azdas wallet etc), a faulty planchet or is post production. Yours looks like damage caused to the coin post production.
  15. Plenty of women on the forum Debbie, a few disguised as men lol And that from somebody whose national dress is a skirt!!!!!!!
  16. You should have email Rob.
  17. DNW had a token sale a couple of months ago comprising mainly of high grade or rare tokens. More than a couple eclipsed Gothic Crowns in price. If you send me a list/pictures I'll do a valuation for you.
  18. You'd better add me to your cuckoo land list then as I don't use Spink to price my stock. A selling price for a dealer has to be a percentage above purchase/part exchange price with a margin built in for discounts/fees/taxes and enough to leave a profit as that is how we make our living. Once I have priced an item it sits in stock until sold so if I was happy with £xxx profit 5 years ago my philosophy is that the same amount will do now. Any dealer using Spink would have to totally overhaul all of their prices individually year on year. Another problem is that Spink is already almost a year out of date as soon as it is published due to the time taken to compile it. It therefore follows that the market may already have overtaken Spinks prices pre-publication (or fallen away in some areas). As a dealer the most infuriating comment I hear is "well Spinks only want blah blah but you're asking more than that" Spink is a guide price NOT A RETAIL PRICE LIST
  19. I attendeed as always (one of the few salerooms within relatively easy striking distance for me). Bidding was the usual bloodbath but I managed to pick up 12 lots. I was underbidder on your 1662 Crown, it went in the room. The engraving kind of killed it but I thought it was worth a punt as it was the rarer inverted die axis type (en medaille rather than coin alignment). Inverted die axis is coin alignment. Until you apply it to an already inverted axis and then it becomes medal
  20. The easiest way to tell a forgery is to place it on a sheet of paper and draw around it with a pencil. Most forgeries are on circular blanks, the originals are never fully round. Another pointer is the surface (yours looks like it was struck rather than cast) or the edge. A good proportion of forgeries have a seam visible around the circumference.

  22. At a guess I would say that CCGB (correct me if I'm wrong Chris) and coin yearbook both take their lead from Spink. Spink will only quote FDC prices because they are a bit sniffy about things and tend not to think that anybody would want anything other than FDC and of course most Spink clients wouldn't.
  23. I think you are all missing an important point. BIN prices on ebay are inflated above Spink prices to cover ebay's 25% or whatever take on every sale. If a Spink price is £100, then the BIN is £120 or £125. That's just common sense by the seller, and in most cases equal stupidity by the buyer. There is one set at £1100, but others at £850. Knock 25% off the latter and you get £637.50 against a Spink list of £650. You regularly see items listed on ebay that are available on the seller's website for significantly less. I'd do exactly the same if selling on ebay because so many people treat it as the only place to buy, so persuading them to pay over the odds is not difficult, whilst ensuring you get a full price after listing costs and fees seems sensible. The extras cost is achievable because so many people are too lazy to search. If people did their homework, ebay sales would diminish somewhat and dealers could make a better living. AFDC doesn't really exist. A coin is either FDC or it is an impaired proof grading as Ef/A UNC etc etc. Totally correct assessment regarding ebay Rob. My ebay shop prices are all well above what I can sell direct from my own site for, but people are too stupid or too lazy to check. Another valid point is that the choice available direct from dealers is usually considerably better than the crap that is sold via ebay sellers and is also (in 99.9% of dealers cases) totally authentic unless otherwise stated.
  24. lusterous brown Brown.....it would have to be wouldn't it?
