Especially if he had to have anything to do with numbers!

I can't comment on how/how many officers would go in for an armed entry as I am still governed by the Official Secrets Act. Anybody who is particularly interested may search for the Home Office Manual of Guidance on the Police Use of Firearms online. As to your points Chris; The Police had the right man as they had reasonable grounds to suspect that he was involved in a serious arrestable offence. An 18 has to be authorised when a person is under arrest otherwise a Magistrates warrant would be required pre-arrest or a 32 could be used if he was arrested at the scene. At the end of the day I am afraid you will have to stump up as any right minded person would ask why your tennant had no key to access the premises? The Police were also searching for what I presume to be an unlawfully held firearm.

Crowns or Halfcrowns?
argentumandcoins replied to Accumulator's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
True, the overhang from the Bole collection is going to influence the market for a while yet. Interesting idea, but if I was happy with smaller coins I would probably stick with pennies as these go back even further. I just like the look and feel of the larger currency. So does my wife Is she out a lot? I was referring to my bank balance... some people, minds in the gutter! -

A strange notion - that the penny is a "smaller coin" ! Methinks it is a reference to the silver ones. -
That would be very kind. Apparently this coin is from a 2009 auction, would that seem right to you? I'd be really interested to know whether the coin is described as 'bright' or not? Also, do you know whether the coins actually came from the hoard 'bright,' or are these just the ones that were so cruddy they were cleaned? The date is wrong for the sale. The hoard was found in 2009, the first part was auctioned on 14/09/11, part 2 18/01/12 and the final part this Wednesday. Lot 14 or 18 from January looks like it could be the one? Both lots mention multiples of CI shillings with mm triangle in each. "good portrait detail and most with lustre" forms part of the description. Lot 14 had 5 shillinga and 15 sixpences, hammered at £540. Lot 18 had 10 shillings and hammered at £750.

The hoard was/is being disposed of over 3 sales, the final part going this week. I am a regular at Tennants but have had little to do with that lot as I mainly deal in milled. We (myself and the old man) have 4 halfcrowns from the hoard as part of our collection. From the coins I have viewed I can say that they come in all conditions and hues, some gun-metal grey and some shite and briney. I found a report for the portable antiquities scheme or finds liaison officer online and printed a copy for the provenance notes of ours (mine is over in Durham at the old mans house) so you could probably do the same. Where/when did you buy it? I can dig out my old catalogues this week and see if I can pin it down to a lot for you.

Crowns or Halfcrowns?

Thank you all for your input, it's much appreciated! I hadn't really thought too much about the "regular denomination" angle. I can certainly see that collecting coins designed for circulation has the edge over collecting those just produced for the purpose, so that has to be a factor. I do very much like the design of the 19C crowns though. Hmmm... think I'll have another look through the coins I already have, go through a few auction catalogues and price lists and try to come to a conclusion. I'm not going to rush though, if only for the sake of my wallet! And John, whatever I go for, I'll certainly check out member's sites CROWNS, CROWNS, CROWNS. If I say it often enough it will subliminally imprint upon you (he says hopefully) I agree with Peck but the less competition in the halfcrown market the better -
Sorry to poo on your party Chris but the reason for entry is a little more than Domestic. An 18 is only authorised to secure and preserve evidence of criminal offences (predominantly drugs or stolen goods). As for his life being in danger, ahem, cough, cough, bullshit, unless of course the polis found his stash that he hasn't paid his supplier for but even then it would have to be a huge amount and accomadation would be provided FOC to your Mr Green courtesy of HMP pre-trial remand.

5 sols, but only exchangeable for assignats (practically worthless notes) Wiki entry:- Les Frères Monneron was built up in England by Matthew Boulton, thanks to the steam engine of James Watt, producing 2 and 5 sols coins in great quantities in the Soho factory in Birmingham from the end of 1791. Watt's steam engine.necessity money eased the coinage shortage then current in France and their technical and aesthetic quality was much superiour to mediocre base metal issues produced by official sources. In March 1792, the Monnerons went bankrupt and Pierre fled. His brother Augustin took over the business, but a law of 3 May 1792 forbade the production of money by private concerns. In September a decree forbade the commercialisation of confidence-coins. These necessity coins were in circulation until the end of 1793. A nice example David, well worth your purchase price. These pieces of

Even more shocking is some poor fool actually bid £3 for it. With p&p that's £4.50! Wonder if he'd like to buy some of my scrap at that price? Check his sold items. Some peanut brained chin dribbler actually paid him £10 for a crappy 1912H. I must have over 200 lying around here. Maybe I should contact the seller and offer him my stock at 30% of his retail?????

Crowns or Halfcrowns?

You're already pushing prices up on Pennies in auctions so go for the Crowns as I don't collect them There is also the added bonus of being able to acquire some good examples from members of the forum -
Chris, a Section 18 search is a search authorised by an Inspector or above following the arrest and detention of a person or persons who are resident of or have access to that property. Following entry the Police would use what is known as a rota joiner (basically an approved joiner that is on a Police rotation list to stop nepotism and bungs) to re-secure the premises. It's strange that a joiner had to be used though as all the 18's I ever did I had the scrotes keys with me (and quite often the scrote or his agent, to ensure the search was conducted properly) so I never had to use the whammer? As for eviction of Mr Green and Ms Brown, I suspect Mr Pink may sort the job for you, oops sorry slipped into Hollywood for a second, you need to see a brief innit mate? That is unfortunately a civil matter which is outwith my knowledge/experience. I do know that you do not want the attention of the old Bill every week or two to sort out The Usual Suspects though!

In the watch list....... fingers crossed Oh shucks it isn't a farthing, I was looking forward to bidding as well It isn't 1807 either, the date being on the coin is always a good clue I do like it though, I think it may well be the bronzed proof and well worth the BIN price, sorry I meant well worth throwing in the BIN.

A shitty modern silver fantasy "maundy set". You used to see them in droves in the salerooms but they have dried up lately. -
Cromwell Half Crown on eBay
argentumandcoins replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
A model of a Cromwell halfcrown surely ? How else could it be so much smaller than a bronze penny? That'll be because the bronze penny (as featured on the front cover of the Spink 2012 catalogue) is greater than life size. Ah! As a non-owner of the latest Spink it would explain why I didn't spot it as a picture. Also, it's unusual for Spink to feature more than one coin on the cover. Are there any doubts as to its authenticity from the pic, and if not what's a good price do people think? Twice bitten! Paulus at risk of causing offence to you and many others can I just point out (again) that there is life outside ebay. Try a genuine dealer or an auction house and at least you will have some form of assurance that all is well (and no I don't have a Cromwell halfcrown for sale). I have no reason to doubt that the coin is genuine or that the sale is also genuine but I would just like to draw your attention to the fact that it is on a private listing, which leaves you wide open to shill bidding. Good luck. Absolutely no offence taken and I won't be bidding, it is already too rich for me! As I understand it, shill bidding will only catch you out if you end up paying more than you originally intended, or more than it is really worth, have I got that right? Far from an expert on these matters and value your input as always! Shill bidding (and again I stress that I am not implying that this coin is being shilled up) will catch you out every time you win an item, purely because your "winning bid" is being pushed on by a dishonest seller. It doesn't matter whether you are well below, below or on your maximum when you "win", you have been dishonestly pushed to that point. A genuine underbidder means that at least one other real person thought it was worth a similar price to you. The fact that you are still happy to win at your top bid is irrelevant is it not? If you like spending as much as you can to acquire coins please feel free to phone me and I will increase some of my prices to a level you are still happy at -

1910 Shilling

It doesn't look any better than VF from the pictures. Value would be about £5-10 depending on how you sold it. -
I've asked to see the other side. A nice looking face is just as important as a good tail! I take it the 'other side' was stunning, how the smeg did it go for £109?? Did you buy it Debbie?!! I don't know how some people bid, but, I note it "shot off" in the final seconds.....

My next door neighbour's 18-year old daughter used to hide behind a bush and sunbathe topless in their garden. I discovered this one day when up a ladder painting the window frames; whilst I couldn't see her directly, the reflection in the window altered the angle and revealed all. By the time I had finished there was 1/2" of paint on the sill... When I was about 13 my neighbours 2 late teen daughters sun bathed topless in their secluded garden....there was an 8ft timber fence between the gardens....however the fence was old and at the knots holes had formed.A hot sunny day in the school holidays and my garden became the venue. And the nickname "Pervy Peter the pine knot popper" was born :D
