  1. On 15th April 2012, I will be running the Brighton Marathon in aid of Winston's Wish. I realise that all bar about two of you only know me as a name on a screen, but I would be incredibly grateful if you might be able to spare a few pennies for this fantastic cause and sponsor me... I have built a JustGiving page (here) where you will find full details. As I say, I know this is cheeky, but if you don't ask you don't get, and every penny counts! Many thanks, James
  2. See, when I applied for Uni - albeit 10 years ago (really?! I'm getting old ) I was advised that there was no point applying for Oxbridge AND Durham/Nottingham/London/Bristol as these others will reject you out of hand on the premise that you'll be going to Oxbridge if your accepted... I don't know if there is any truth to this, however there were several people in my year who DID apply for combinations of these and got at least one unexpected rejection... Personally, I went to Exeter (University of... - not ...College Oxford!) and loved every minute!
  3. when is the alloy changing? is that not going to affect thickness slightly to maintain weight?
  4. Is that not a broken 6? The shape looks very similar...
  5. Ahh, but at least he's gone to the effort of finding the right picture to convince you it is what he says it is!
  6. As far as I can tell, you just e mail your details and bid. I don't think you have to register. Yep, bidding is remarkably easy... getting an invoice out of them is a touch more complicated however!
  7. Interesting - whilst I've never really look that closely, I hadnt realised that there was such an obvious difference between the two... I guess I've not had two in decent enough grade at the same time!
  8. Hmm... "The milled rim displays the usual evidence of a brockage coin"... Opinions?!
  9. I'm confused?! Is it me or is that just a plain old 1893?!
  10. I'm sorry... £25 for the olympic swimming 50p?! I'll have to re-value my collection!
  11. Do they really expect to shift 27 20p undated mules for a minimum of £40 each?!
  12. Yes, and too many! Works the other way as well though... as a seller, I always state in the description 'sensible reserve' or words to that effect, yet people still bid £1.24! Why?! I'm hardly going to 2nd chance offer you at that price!
  13. Welcome! I cant see anything unusual in the image (something bigger might help) so at the moment, yes it is worth precisely 2p!
  14. Welcome to the forum and a nice little error you have there! Values for these are always quite difficult, but an error collector who didnt have one might part with as much as a tenner... as to how many there are, I have two or three so not exactly rare - a nice curio if nothing else!
  15. I've bought a couple of bits (never more than about £20), and only tried to sell once... a 1996 Silver Proof set which they were selling at the time for £175 - was offered £70 for it! I laughed and walked away! Personally, I believe that some of the pricing in there is crazy - but some people obviously pay it or they wouldnt still be in business!
  16. There was a great Coin Monthly advert, late 60s - INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY, THE RARE 1951 PENNY, Buy ONE, or Discounts for Purchases of 10 or 100. Wonder if any of the buyers of 100 ever saw their money back? They created their own markets by hyping coins...Top 10 investments etc which with hindsight were all damp squibs. Hang on - are we talking about Coin Monthly or a fairly well-known issue from opposite the BM?!
  17. Uh oh... I sense a repeat of the 'drilling a penny' fiasco... TAKE COVER!
  18. Error - yes, a broken die... Rare - nope, sorry! I did see one of the 'polo' £2 sold on ebay as 'loose middle' - the clamp marks on the outer and bash marks on the inner were soo bad that they showed clearly on a very blurred pic!
  19. Yes - slightly off-putting particularly when you intimate to limited knowledge! A touch steep, but I've seen far worse! And the 1890 groat... and the 1887 Crown...! Still - everything there is honestly photographed and described and I like the ruler at the top of the pics! Regarding your neg feedback for the dollar - ignore them... if they buy a dollar, it's going to be dollar sized! You always get some ejits on fleabay!
  20. I enjoyed the 'in the proper light' bit! The absence thereof perhaps?!
  21. Hmmm... some fairly negative feeling here! Personally, i quite like Coinex - and significantly more now its back in central london rather than western copenhagan! (ok, eXcel center - but close enough!) I tend to rock up on Saturday morning (for the free entry bit) with maybe £200 on me, and wander round chatting to and getting to know dealers... if I see something I fancy, I'll have a punt! It can be a bit crowded, but no worse than the supermarket at the same time! Granted I live in Slough, so its 45mins train/tube or 60mins train/walk to Grosvenor Square, so that removes a fair amount of pain! Hey ho, each to their own! Given that you seem fairly local to the big smoke, so i figure it must be worth one try!
  22. Could wing it off to the Royal Mint - they'll authenticate it... and all for the price of a stamp!
