  1. Other than books covering the copper and bronze coinage (Peck, Bramah, Freeman etc), there are no specific farthing books that I am aware of. It is a project I am looking into at the moment. The Colin Cooke catalogues are the only other literature that used to have features on varieties etc. Good luck with the project, Colin G. Can the Colin Cooke catalogues still be purchased. I've looked on the Colin Cooke web site but it states 'At present, we have no catalogues available for purchase'.
  2. Is this a secret hobby of yours Chris that has just been let out of the closet.
  3. Does anyone know of any book(s) specific to farthings.
  4. Primarily I keep my silver coins in the coin trays but would copper and bronze coins also be alright placed naked in the trays? Mark

  8. Ok, I have finally settled with Coin Manage UK from Liberty Street Software, it's just so easy to add a scan of your coin. Still running with an Excel spreadsheet though, just for the posterity.

  19. I found this article on the coin news website. Check your change everybody - after 25 years (the last instance being with the 1983 New Pence/Two pence reverse) the Royal Mint have let a mule slip through their usually strict quality control! The 20p coin has been minted with the old obverse and new "jigsaw puzzle" reverse so of course it has no date - at this stage we don't know how many coins got out but it won't be many so start looking! As far as we're aware this is the first time, since the advent of milled coinage certainly, that a circulating coin has appeared with no date. A Royal Mint spokesperson said: “The Royal Mint can confirm that a small number of new design 20 pence coins have been incorrectly struck using the obverse from the previous design, resulted in these coins having no date. “The issue has now been resolved and the Royal Mint would like to reassure members of the public that these coins are legal tender. “Prior to the new reverse designs which were launched in April 2008, the date appeared on the reverse side of the 20p. As the date on the new designs has been moved to the obverse side, minting the coin with the new reverse but previous obverse has meant no date appears on the coin.â€
  20. Thanks for the update Derek, I can't wait for the book to be released. Mark
  21. I have had in my change the 1p 2p 5p 10p and 20p and they all have the year 2008 on the obverse side. They have been officially released otherwise you would not see them in your change. I'm not to keen on the new designs myself, they seem to have lost all personality, not that the decimal coins had much anyway. Do you like the new desgins Carl? Mark
  22. Hi Mark, Welcome to the love affair with half crowns - don't resist! If you've managed to get eveything from Edward VII in UNC them you're either very lucky or very rich, or both. A genuinely BU circulation 1911 is proving the Holy Grail at the moment. Plenty of them out there almost make it, but so far none has come up to scratch (or non-scratch). Plenty of 1911 proofs (which I have) too, but no really top notch circulation issues. I have seen a couple of near BU 1905s recently, but they came with a price to match. Fine if you're on a premiership footballer's salary, but I guess the average premiership player isn't up to appreciating coins. G I understand that the half crown is not everyone’s cup of tea so to speak, but you like what you like. The half dollar as it was, just does something to me. There’s nothing better than pulling out a tray(s) with some weight to it. Unfortunately for me Gary I am not a football player and most of my half crowns at the moment fall into the G V, G VI and E II category, although I do have a couple of E VII in VF. As with most of us we start off buying anything and everything, I am now content with collecting the half crown, florin and the brass threepence as my main areas for concern (as my wife puts it). Mark
