  1. An invisible "in hand" fingerprint ... I will sit down and think through the surreal logic of that I'm so confused. Right footie starts tomorrow. How do you think the Jocks will get along?
  2. My cabinet was hand made using reclaimed Victorian mahogany.I also use Lindner trays, aluminium cases, and Britannia folders.Self adhesive flips also. All my pennies are in a damp cardboard box in the shed
  3. I think it is a hammered guinea. About 28mm it will be a 1/2d (which it looks like) anything smaller a 1/4d....start it at 99p and that is where it will finish. I'm off to eat my beans now.
  4. With sets that contain "sets only" or "proof only" coins, it is an observable fact that selling those coins individually will generally bring in more than the whole unbroken set would. I've split cheap 70s proof sets before now in order to supply demand for individual coins, and never regretted it (financially). The same is true of 1953 'plastic' sets which can be bought absurdly cheap sometimes - yet you could sell the BU penny for near on a fiver, the halfcrown for £3-£4, the halfpenny £3, etc etc. If keeping for your own collection, then if you really don't want them in the packaging, then go ahead and break it. Just remember that the coins MAY degrade quicker once out of their protective shells, unless stored carefully. However, do bear in mind that (e.g. 1983) coins that aren't "sets only" issues, will have little more than face value for years to come, so you must make that calculation yourself. Thanks Peck, (everytime I type Peck it reminds of the film Willow!) I will be sure to look into the values of each coin before I decide to break any sets up. If any future value decrease would be negligible, then I will probably store them the same as the rest of my collection and break them up. Are the self adhesive holders trustworthy for long term storage? You will never become rich with modern tat.I have picked up several 1953 sets for £5/£6 which is so cheap and a load of currency sets for diddly. Self adhesive flips appear OK but so did PVC back in the 60's. Treat yourself to a decent Mahogany or Rosewood cabinet.
  5. Below fair although has reasonable eye appeal. Buy it if you like it.
  6. You cannot retire on the proceeds but heck there is some history there.Value wise I think the forum has been over generous. The hammered and silver have bullion value.I love the George 1 1/2d...what has that bought over the years.Put em away and in 100 yrs time your family may thank you.
  7. One little tip. Do not try and clip the trees in the front garden after a few sips of scrumpy...luckily I fell on my head.
  8. Like this shilling Nice toning Thanks Gary, that's mine, yey!! I don't buy to sell (unless there is a snip on fleabay) but I do like to know that I wouldn't lose on the coins I have if I had to sell them, and I think that is definitely the case with this one, in fact I think if I got it graded and slabbed it could easily go for 300 + at auction or in the US ... Of course I know that is very small potatoes for some of the high rollers on here! I could live with that..it is a no brainer
  9. Same law as in the States - you can't melt coins that are or have been currency (though for pre-1816 it doesn't apply). It's not policed very thoughly though as far as I can tell. Witness the number of dealers advertising to buy pre-47 and pre-20 silver coins. Exactly ~ and in fairness, it would be exceedingly difficult to police. Was I dreaming, or was something posted on here a few months ago about the 1864 penny being rumoured to have gold in it ? and I used to slip in the sport in the vast bulk of the Times...todays nipple count is Is that "rumoured" as in "there's rumoured to be both a B52 bomber and a red London bus on the moon"? Now watch me look really silly when someone posts that yes, there really was such a rumour
  10. Yep, my mistake. I was thinking of the James Workman penny and other wholly on line auctions, in which bidders were informed of higher bids during the progress of the auction. Obviously not possible where there is actual bidding on the floor of the auction house. As you were chaps. Excuse my thick moment Ah the CC auction method.A Dutch auction.
  11. Hi The first thing in collecting is to learn NEVER buy from magazines, newspapers et all. That is if you want to buy value or maybe make a profit. There are not dedicated sites for these items (check Ebay is your best bet). Sorry but the buyer has been ripped off.
  12. Welcome Copper123 You are very lucky to find those coins in change. I have been looking for years, even the village PO checked for me. The mint messed up on the mintage for Kew garden 50p's which has now been corrected. The damage was done and now Ebay prices are still too high.Well done on shifting the 20p's they will be worth £20 for the next 60 years (like 50,51 pennies....hyped)
  13. 22p a grab bag and a couple of roaches (smartie tube size and a picture of Mrs Peter with her 46 & 49 thrupenny bits.I will also throw in my picture of flipper (the original waxed dolphin). I just know Peck will out bid me.
  14. Oh you naughty boys. I'm just in the process of selling the Queens finger nail clippings on the Bay,with a free bag of Corgi POO. Special discount for Forum members.
  15. Take the bird out and give it large to your mates how rich you have become.Sod that, order crisps and pork scratchings with your pint and lavish yourself with brined cockles at closing time...you have now reached the heady heights of a coin collector..ps Don't tell em on a first date. I came out after about 6 months...by that time her bust and reverse were in my collection.
  16. Yep That's a 1777 evasion. The 1st proper one I have seen As it is GEF for the series worth about 999,999 somethings.
  17. The Monarchy is unique. Why should we throw away centuries of tradition? There are very few of our coins without the monarch on them.yance I'm quite happy to go along with the pomp and circumstance.
  18. That is interesting. I thought myself it may of been a halfpenny or farthing, but the shield on the reverse is slanting to the left. The only pictures I have found on the net, similar to this coin and date show the shield slanting to the right. Hopefully azda can can confirm what it is after he has had a look at it. Google evasion coins. A large proportion of the Geo 111 copper listed on ebay are evasions. The two rarest evasion coins are dated 1777 or J77J and are worth millions.
  19. What you have I'm sure is an evasion.(counterfeit) During George 111 reign there was a shortage of copper. The majority of the copper circulating were evasions (lighter and fairly crude). These evasions can have dates when there was no official mintage. They are collectable in their own right especially in the US.
  20. These are my favourite of all the 'full-size' farthings, I especially love the colour of the copper for this period, when unpitted, that is! I recently sold a 'no obverse stops' coin that I also ummed and aahhhed about keeping instead! Why didn't you go for it at £125? £125 I would of wasted my time..."he says as wiping egg off face"
  21. Not sure what my Mom's gotten to do with it Peter ... And I'm pretty sure that even a mere 300 years ago cattle were gotten in from the fields and a shilling would have gotten you ale and a wench to, er .. hold your ale while you went to the privy. You must be younger than I thought. OK I'm as young as the women I like to feel....canned laughter. OK Richard...touche http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_gotten_correct_grammar

  23. My 1st impression is whether I like a coin or not.I put everything together before I will make a play for a coin. I liked lot 1422 in London Coins auction but not sufficiently...I ummed and arrd.I would of bought it for £125 within a heartbeat from a dealers list.I'm sure the estimate is light. It is an example where the grade is secondary. http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Catalogue&startres=50&category=9&searchtype=3
  24. Richard If you ever use the word gotten or even the word Mom I will be around your gaff with a 15LB cod to swack you around your chops. It ain't English.Right me old cocker.
