The first coin seems to be an Elizabeth I shilling of the sixth issue, mint mark 1 and in that condition (fair/fine) I'd say it was worth about £20 in auction. A lot depends upon who wants it on the day!

I note, with amusement, that the obverse is not shown and it is described as "looks like Elizabeth 1st". It netted £ 118.04. Even the Mari Theresa is probably a modern production! - unless the buyer knows something?

Checking "Coincraft" I thought Class 4C more likely. "'Quote'- As previous (Larger Letters and wider crown), but larger face with much more hair, comma abbreviation marks and thick waisted 'S' in obverse legend'". I realise there is only one comma abbreviation mark on the obverse, but all the rest fits!?

I find that Word is as good as any. I download pictures of the coin, obverse and reverse, then add the details below. Keeping to A5, I can get 3 coins per page and, if I use 90gm paper or heavier, I can print both sides and produce a 'Catalogue' of all my collection. It is easy to update as I use a loose leaf folder to hold it.

I think it has been said many times on the forum, buy books first, then coins. Knowledge gives you the edge and also helps prevent that 'dud' purchase!

Believe it or not! I found an Edward I penny in VF in the sand on the beach in - North Scotland!!! I still puzzle about it today, 50 years on!

It's heavily clipped, usual for the minor coins of the period, but would appear to be a farthing and could be Class 1A of Edward I, but realistically, with the few decipherable letters, could be any of the Edwards. Weight should be around 0.3-0.4gms for a farthing and 0.6gms for a halfpenny - given the clipping!

Maybe Halfpenny Whynot give the diameter of the widest part!

Nope! I can't help any more. I still think the top one is Edward I. Continuing research is the attraction of Plantagenet coins for me, so good hunting!

I'd put the top one as Edward I Class 3E by the crown and letter position. With trifoliate crown, I'd say the middle one is Edward I too, with well formed spearsI'd have said it was around Class 8 but- the legend appears to read ED R ANG... which belongs to the earlier Cass 1? All you can say about the third is that it "probably" is Edward III with Bifoliate crown. Mostly guesses! How about pictures of the reverses. It could be that the centre one is an "esterling" (contemporary continental copy)

I think there was no real seperation between the reigns, and any variation was both regional and gradual rather than "a new broom" approach. It's probable that the various classes were in use for a wide timeframe around the succession.

Yeh! But it wouldn't be the first time I've come across an Edward 'penny' measuring 11mm (especially on ebay)

I admit this is puzzling. Coincraft has the obverse legend at EDWAR R ANGL DNS HYB on the drawing but quotes EDWAR ANGL DNS HYB in the text. The broken lefthand spear on the crown, bifoliate crown, lettering and hairstyle makes me agree with Edward II class 11a. You don't specify size but as there are no halfpennies in the series from canterbury, it must be a penny!
