Awesome, the ref of Key over crown was written by the previous... I thought it was the Key was above the kings crown??? this page of mint marks is a real eye opener, I certainly be looking into this further, again Stuart, many thanks "H"

Hello Stuart, aha so now a date correct for this one, many thanks for your help, I think I miss typed by mentioning I.M Trefoil... this is on one of the other coins the one showing is "Key over Crown"........ is there by chance a page that give a guide to the Mint marks ? ....... all good knowledge to have, many thanks "H"

hello all, there's 3 of probably the best of my coins, So following on from recent conversations these are Shillings........ I will do one at a time so hopefully not bombard the forum... they have come with notes but I only now got to look into things, this is mentioned as, James I, Silver Shilling, I.M Trefoil (key over crown... could this be the Mint Mark?) Somewhere there is a 1/4 farthing that was found by my parents in the 50's, going through a junk box that was tossed out and what treasures would be found? it has been treasured by the family and lived in a small pot on top of the television until it was passed to my "one day this will be valuable.........!" the value can only be sentimental although I did seen one on ebay that was in its original brass tin... sold for £33 I think. on another similar rummage day I found a Ride Token ahhhhharrrggghhh! I was given my Grandfathers brass badges I guess I was 10, in my 20's I rediscovered them and kept searching, pre computers.. The RA Museum told me the file to look at and spent a whole day at the public records office as the day was closing I was 3 pages away from finding the war diary entry with his name written as wounded. what a day when I was able to show my mother. It also kick started collection medals from the WW1 and the researching of them. I was also able to work with the commonwealth war graves commission as 2 medal receivers were kill in action but wasn't mentioned... you have to provide information evidence etc to have the names added it was very rewarding in knowing It wasn't just collection...

Hello and thank you, it was a interesting story and seemed to be believable, the guy sell was a furniture restorer, he claimed it was checked and all seemed well. as I age I get paranoid... the others I have have come from a historical coin dealer and some good deals happened why before the gold rush.. Sovereigns for £100 ! I will get the Silver shown and the Sovereigns and Guineas to follow. In the 90's it was a bowl of warm soapy water and a soft tooth brush rinse in cold water and pat with kitchen towel.... just to get the grime and grease off. many thanks for your comments its a welcomed lesson. 👍

Following on from my grandfathers Hoard...... A boot fair find would have been 1990's, 1933's up to 1953's.. theres some tarnish and what looks like undoing a screw with a few.. I know there's some 1960's Rands somewhere that came with the 3p's... I seem to think this was a haggle as they were believed to be silver... really hope to find these next.... I need to ask if the South African 3p worth keeping or move them on... I don't feel attached to them so its not a issue. thoughts views values? greatly appreciated. many thanks "H"

so better photos in day light may be of use. the kitchen scales pick it up as 8grms, these are just kitchen scales so nothing definitive as being wrong as my others do show as 8grms as well.

just kitchen scales so nothing arcuate, there's a local jeweller who's a good sort to know. i know of fake 9ct, I have genuine Victorian and all seems straight, I will keep checking and let you know the out come, Rgds "H"

Hello Flash, the shoulder title is S Of G school of gunnery he was posted there when it was experimental establishment, the cap badge is the Royal Artillery he was with the RGA section of the R, Another thing that gets missed however there's the wounded stripe, I have all of his brass inc his Gun Layer trade and Gunnery instructors badge, The Artillery Corporals were called Bombardier.... I have looked into his service and found lost of paperwork its only been this year that I found out about the Shoeburyness Essex experimental Establishment, sadly there's no records of this and by chance I was going over some old letters and the address caught my eye "S Of G" now this is dated 1920, his regt number and Shoeburyness... it all added to the jigsaw.

He had died before I was born, I've managed to gather up all his army photos and research, His military service was from 1913 up until 1920 when he was at School of Gunnery Shoeburyness, it was experimental cannons being fired. when the army finish and he was demobbed... when his medals arrived home he opened the and threw them on the fire in disgust... I'm now 58 and so feel the need to preserve his history in case it gets forgotten.

its been a light bulb moment... I can use the duplicates and fill in the gaps so at least have a continues group of dates, or keep randomly buy coins and adding them to the hoard !?!??! why break the family habit? 🤣

Hello All, Today Ive moved away from my collection and thought Id show and tell some of my Grandfathers ....hoard. the story is my mother passed them on to me when i was 20 something it was my inheritance as Brother and sister borrowed money off Mother and never paid it back!!!!!!. I've never borrowed from her. The coins (grandfer's) were kept in a princess Mary's 1914 Xmas Tin, I've no Idea How or Why he started keeping these coins, there's no explanation from the family and these would have been currency when he was around using them.... unless he kept them as savings when currency was changing and the silver content involved? I have catalogued the 3 pence and its probably better to show the hoard as one lot.... please shout out if any particular dates would like to be seen? also here's the great debate. Do I consolidate with my coins or keep them separate and let the others deal with family history? Also.. what would be suggested as general value for a 3 pence? the grade is good some much better others not so... it wouldn't be fair to ask to value each individually. and Thank you advance, Ive also add a photo of the man in question, Frank Norris, RGA. 1884, 1885, 1890, 1895 x2, 1896, 1897, 1899, 1900 x2, 1907, 1908, 1912 x2, 1913, 1914 x3, 1915 x2, 1916 x15, 1917 x5 1918 x7, 1919 x6, ......... For @Citizen H, Yes, it looks like there are problems with a number of the letters on the 1776 two pence, but that is not scarce for that era. Interesting, but not changing the value enormously. Ah so Paddy, any ideas of the value, I need to mention this isn't a profitable exercise, I've never had these looked at and better I do this now then let the other bin these in my absence, I can remember they would have been 50p or £1 around 1992.... sad that this comes down to how much they are worth but this is the way things go,........ BWM 1914/18 medal was scrapped in the 1970's the price of silver went though the roof and the veterans wanted the money....there a lot of 14/18 Trios missing the BWM sad but the world spins and moves on and over everything..... Imperfections Hello Paddy & DaveG38 I did use a magnifying glass and I was tired when viewing.... on using the computer to in large the pictures you can see that there's imperfections, I have read the forum and talk of worn dies, I have now seen the 1 that looks like a miss print 7 ( the date for GIII would correctly be 1776, not 1716 as quite rightly pointed out by Paddy, ) Also the letter R also may be miss print.... this is all very new to me, incredible as well as very interesting... the smaller coins will be a real challenge. please take a look and see what you make of it, many thanks "H"

Hello Paddy, this small group is the worse from my grandfathers hoard, I took it that they were Maundy 3d... as I have 20 (Believed to be Maundy coins) that I bought over the years 1992 up until 2015... one has a note written by me saying Victorian Colonial, Silver Coin 1 1/2 1839.... so this I guess this is what was bought as Maundy in error..? me thinks this was the end period of buying!?!??! oh heck 20 to follow ......to be checked and confirmed..... I'll tell you I thought this coin collecting would easier than the medals.... Not so....! Many Thanks "H"
