  1. Yep. I saw an NGC MS64 BN graded 1825 halfpenny for sale the other day, but it was clearly an 1825 farthing. I let the dealer know it was misattributed and they pulled it. But that said, that's a pretty basic thing to get wrong. Interesting. Would it be easy to spot the difference between the two?
  2. Yes indeed. Even came with the original care instructions. I think the recesses will be fine for what I need. I'm only really after bronze and copper and don't really have anything bigger than a Victorian copper penny, so there's at least 3 of each size recess trays which should be fine.
  3. Evening all, Just had my 1826 proof farthing come back from NGC with the PF64 BN grade that I was expecting. I don't normally send things for grading, but I do with any proof that I get. However, they haven't noted it as Bronzed on the label which they have with my 1831 proof farthing. So I had a look on the NGC population report and NGC have two separate entries for 1826 proof farthings: 1826 BARE BUST and 1826 BARE BUST BRONZED I've just emailed NGC to ask them what's going on, as Spink only has a Bronzed proof, yet Peck says there is a Bronzed AND a rarer Copper proof. Seeing as NGC have graded more of the 1826 BARE BUST than the 1826 BARE BUST BRONZED I think it's highly improbable that they are the copper proofs. Does anyone know anything about these proofs at all please, as I don't really expect NGC to have any explanation if they've made an error. Cheers
  4. I successfully nabbed a Peter Nichols Pheon cabinet off eBay a couple of weeks ago for almost bang on to the penny what I had budgeted for. Lovely little thing. Very pleased with it. I'm just now getting organised to get everything organised. Great success.
  5. I had the same problem with the proof Memorial Sovereign I ordered from the RM. *Three* times the coin had to be returned for replacement as each replacement had marks in the fields. The return postage was paid for by them on their returns page, but I was extremely disappointed with them. In the end I complained and told them to cancel the order and refund me. It then took a whole month to get my money back. Quite shocking really. I won't be ordering from them again as a matter of principal.
  6. Indeed. I've seen both sides of the grading and there's quite some variance. Some coins I look at and think "how did you get that as choice uncirculated" and others I look at and think "that's far and away better than you think". But what do I know?
  7. I have a few in the same situation. I reckon the people at NGC must eat their sandwiches whilst doing the grading. It's very off putting, especially when it's a really nice coin. That and all the strands of felt randomly attached all over the show.
  8. Thanks both. Yes, looking at them, the pennies are far more convoluted than the farthings, with only around 7 or 8 O's and R's at best. I probably paid over the odds for mine with BP, but it was a lovely coin and I wanted it. Sadly, it's been graded by NGC with a lovely piece of white toot sitting slap bang in the middle of Victoria's chest. May have to free it from the tomb as it bothers me.
  9. Evening all, Just cataloguing some bits here and checking out the die pairings on some of my farthings. I've got an 1880 farthing (4 berries variety) which Freeman has as F541 with dies as 5 + D. Looking in Peck, he seems to mention Obv 5 as only having 3 berries though? Or have I got this all wrong? Not sure what to make of it, so any clarity gratefully received. Ta.
  10. I saw this on the BBC website and thought this was quite interesting. Apologies if you've already seen it. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tyne-65401761
  11. Much obliged to you. Thanks
  12. Afternoon all, Just acquired this little piece and wondered if there was an 8 over 8 variety, or whether this was just an overstrike? I've looked in Freeman but can't see anything, but I know there are a couple of 5 over types. Unfortunately I can't zoom in clearly on it, but hope it can be seen.
  13. Thanks Vicky, that's interesting to know. It's not as valuable as that, probably about a grand, but may be worth the ask as you say. Much obliged.
  14. Morning all. I'm just having a look at Baldwins (now The Strand) auction fees as I'm looking to put up a coin that I recently got. Reading their terms, it looks like their vendor's fee is the same as the buyer's fee at 20% plus VAT. Is this normal? It seems excessively high to me, as they'll be making around 48% in total for any lot they sell. Or is this just the way of the world right now?
  15. Baffles me when I see this type of thing on ebay. I saw one listing the other day where the bloke's fingers looked like he'd been doing an oil change on his lawnmower. Can't remember what the coin was, but I do know it was silver, so Christ knows what that'll turn up like.
  16. I saw this on another forum earlier, and wondered if anyone else had seen this? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11886091/British-auction-house-boss-arrested-NYC-fraudulent-sale-worlds-expensive-coin.html https://www.coinworld.com/news/world-coins/authorities-arrest-dealer-repatriate-record-setting-coin 😮
  17. Much obliged to you. Ta.
  18. Morning, Seeing as I've put my back out and can't work, I'm going through some coins trying to get to grips with the 1860 - 1861 bronze pennies and halfpennies. The wordpress links that someone very kindly gave me have been really useful. I just wanted to check this coin out to make sure I'm in the right ball park as it seems to be a hell of a lot of die parings with these. I'm fairly confident in it being Reverse G, but would I be right with Obverse 6? Does this make it an F277? I may be completely wrong, so any help would be most welcome. Cheers.
  19. Perfect. Thanks very much for the reply. Looking at your link, that looks perfect for what I need. Looking at the bits on his website, he has some stellar looking stuff. Appreciate it.
  20. Morning all, I'm looking to get myself a small cabinet to move my bits out of flips into, so could anyone recommend anywhere to get one from please? I've had a look online for new ones, and can only find Peter Nichols or Rob Davis. Now then, after emailing the Peter Nichols website, I think there is a scam going on there. After doing a bit of research after a couple of email exchanges, it looks like Peter Nichols et al retired over 10 years ago. The phone diverts to a weird call answering service, and the bank details for payment were in what sounded like an African name, and from a weird bank that I had never heard of. Nothing went further at my end than that. Is Rob Davis still around and manufacturing does anyone know? I just rang and no answer. I only wanted a small sized one that would fit inside a safe (like Peter Nichols annulet), so failing that, I suppose it'll have to be keeping an eye out on ebay. Cheers.
  21. Indeed. It was only when you mentioned the different F number that I looked and remembered they had it as F118. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference between the two, but then my eyes aren't what they used to be. To be honest, there were quite a few that I was after, but bank balance dictated where I went. I did manage to pick up the 1880 farthing as well though. All being said, I thought it was quite a reasonable sale actually.
  22. This is the one I was after at the Baldwins auction if I didn't get the Sixpence. Lovely specimen.
  23. I believe gold is treated differently, as I asked the same question to the auction house when I was bidding on something over there. They have a branch here in the UK, and this was their reply: "...There is also an import duty of 5% on coins that are not bullion. If they are bullion, there is no import applicable." That said, maybe it's because they have a branch here that they are able to do this by getting the coins shipped office to office. I wouldn't like to categorically say no. Sorry if that's vague.
  24. Thanks for confirming that. I think that a near 30% add-on is excessive and as you say, I'd *really* want the coin to justify parting with that kind of excess. All seems a bit much really.
