  1. Yes, but less than the ones that aren't dipped. It all depends on the individual coin. Personally I try to avoid putting dipped coins on the website, unless they are scarcer or I maybe purchased them in a collection. I always ask less than I would normally ask if they were naturally toned. Unfortunately here in Germany dipped coins are common. German collectors seem to put an emphasis on appearance, and not originality, which is what it should be about.
  2. Normally, from the un-natural tone, often too bright, or with purples like that penny. Sometimes too orange. You just get the feel for a dipped coin. Harder to tell than a polished coin because with polishing you get hairlines.
  3. Probably not, those kinds of kinds I usually just put out for scrap.
  4. So it's a very worn bun penny. You may be able to make out what bust it is and narrow it down further, but assuming of course the the obv is just as worn then you'll probably find it impossible.
  5. I'd say it isn't a proof, I've seen them toned like that before, usually after being dipped. And double striking on close examination is common with those. Also the fields really don't look smooth enough to be a proof. I'd say it a high grade dipped coin that has re toned, and be very confident in that.
  6. Why don't you want my 1674 Sixpence, it's nice
  7. Thanks, yes that's sensible, I think I heard that once before. Don't they use gold/silver alloy for the newer gold coins?
  8. I suppose it has something to do with style, and the fact that us, as 'eccentric' coin collecting types, find it very difficult to like anything new. It's the Romantic in us all!
  9. I think i told you before what that's worth William. And wherever did you get a gilt 1900 farthing from? ;-) Did you see my Gilt 1799 Halfpenny on the website?
  10. Frankly, Westminster collection are a business, not a coin dealer by any stretch of the imagination. I can't stand new issues, the kind issued just to make profit, and I can't stand the way people like 'Westminster Collection' (who are not based anywhere near Westminster) market such products to the unsuspecting public. Boycott Westminster collection, and buy some real coins that will actually rise in value in less than 100 years!
  11. I expect that has something to do with 'Gold Tone' and the Sneaky Vipers, the legendry 1940's banjo based band.... Not really, I have no idea why you should get Banjo results!
  12. No I wouldn't have thought it was a fake, it probably ended up toned either because of handling or being stored in the wrong conditions. It is unusual for gold to tone but not impossible with modern proofs. I had a 1988 Proof gold set the other month, and one of the coins in that was slightly toned in a similar way. If any one knows the reason why proof gold can tone, when gold is pretty inert, I'd like to know too.
  13. S*?t, not you as well! Sorry mate, I was pruning at the member list trying to delete the 'dead' members and I seem to have deleted a few regular members too :-( I'll be very careful next time. How many posts were you on? I can manually ammend that with your new account.
  14. Well good question. I once got 5 Wreath Crowns and a whole load of other quality stuff for £70.00 A large quantity of early milled, lots of BU modern, few bit of Roman, lots of quality Victorian and later for £350.00 I've already tripled my money on that lot and am still selling some of it! I was once offered a shoe box of cigarette cards for £2.00 and was able to get £70 for them! There have been others too, but some of them I'd rather keep under wraps at the moment ;-)
  15. Sometimes proof gold coins do tone, probably with a little help from the finger print. Personally I'd reject it, if it is not as described. There is no way any one would pay £175 for it like that, in fact I feel £100 was steep. Modern proofs should be absolutely perfect.
  16. There are a lot of fat men in the West, lots of sausage and lederhosen everywhere, but generally in the East people are much trimmer. They eat better now than they did before the wall came down, of course, but most of them have retained their figures. That goes for the ladies too ;-) At least they'd have somewhere all of their own to put their towels!
  17. Yes, every serious world coin collector/dealer should have a couple (1801 - 1900 & 1901 - now), they are a bit expensive, but as far as I know they are the only decent world coin guide in English. The postage is not cheap either, they are like double phone book size! You can sometimes get better prices, I got mine at less than the RRP from Amazon.de, but of course that wouldn't be possible in the UK. I can also get them from Token publishing with a 25% discount, but the postage really eats that up.
  18. As yes, you're one of those American type chaps aren't you. Very nice to meet you. I didn't know that Sylvester had recommended you, but it doesn't surprise me, he's a good chap and that's the kind of example we need set to all the youngsters isn't it. Well done Sylvester!
  19. Very true, but we can't blame that on Master J.M.D.
  20. I wish I was good enough with data bases to re associate your old data with the new user, but I fear it has been lost. When pruning members it gives me the option to prune using: No. of posts, date of last post, and date joined. I used a combination of them and chopped you off somehow. I'll be extra careful with that function from now on.
  21. Yes that would be no trouble, but I was thinking along the lines of being able to post larger pictures, store more messages etc. Sylvester, you've posted 500 so that makes you a Forum God now, as well as an expert member!
  22. Well, I thought I only removed people that had never posted for over 3 months but I may have removed people that made very few posts over a shorter time too. I'm very sorry. You understand these things have to be done to remove all the clutter of members than never do anything. It is not possible for me to reinstate you as such, I'll have to ask you to create another account with the same user name I'm afraid. The last thing I wanted to do was remove active members, I too have seen you round lots, and I'll make sure I make it up to you if you re-join. Terribly sorry.
  23. In the East, near Dresden/Leipzig/Chemnitz, but probably closer to the Czech border, and probably closer to Prague than Berlin. The Erzgebergishe region to be presise.
  24. Well yes, and you are able to store more personal messages, and post larger images. The others will have to aspire to be like you, won't they.
  25. That's right, you 2 are allowed to freely edit your messages at any point you like. That's what you get for being an 'expert member' you see!
