  3. Further to the above, I have a couple of 1861 pennies (F29 & F33) where the G of D:G: has been badly repaired (rotated) with both a "curved" and a "straighter" G punch so either of these could have been used to produce the VIGTORIA error.

  5. A very interesting and plausible explanation. I’m sure there’s much more to the story, however, given the straight sides of the tail of the ‘usual’ G and the very different curved sides in the tail of the G in Victoria. Only ten known surviving examples? You must be absolutely delighted…what an acquisition for a penny collector! Well done, Sir!

  7. With the purchase of an 1806 gilt copper proof from LCA last weekend, I've now got all three 1806 proofs from the KP31 die - Peck 1325, 1326 &1327, gilt, bronzed copper & copper. Whilst I've no intention of even attempting to become a major SOHO proof specialist collector (a lifetime's work, pretty much), it's always good to get a few proofs, and these were easy to recognise because of the incomplete 0 and no base serif to 1.
