Paddy started following 1862 R over R (in Victoria) 1862 uk penny ?

Hi John, Welcome to the forum! The varieties and micro-varieties of pennies are a hot topic here, and there is often hot debate as to which is which. It is not really my area of collecting, but as I understand it, a "Variety" is when there has been a change in the design or layout of the dies. What you have might be called a "micro-variety" where an existing die has been repaired by re-entering damaged or misplaced letters or numbers. During the Victorian era this happened a great deal, so there are hundreds, if not thousands, of examples around. They are collected by the enthusiasts, but generally do not warrant a separate mention in the books. (With exceptions!) There are also "die faults" where cracks or dents in the dies result in anomalies. These are also not really varieties (though some have been listed as such in the past) but are still collected by some. Varieties generally have assigned rarity levels and so prices. Micro-varieties and die faults are much more difficult to value as it depends on finding a collector who wants them.

In theory it's supposed to be the equivalent of GEF in the UK system. https://mycoinage.co.uk/grading-guide It usually closer to lower EF in my experience.

Hello, Last week I went on The Beginners section in relation to a possible R over R (in Victoria) 1862 uk penny. Secret Santa very kindly replied to my enquiry stating that the R anomoly was in fact, a die repair and not 'a variety'. As a new coin enthusiast can anyone kindly help me with confirming what this should be called....? Thankyou for any help. John B

AU-50 is ... what exactly? A typical nonsense USA grade amounting to probably no more than VF.

I used to have a few when I first collected as a teenager. The Victorian rupees were much more affordable than the British version. It was a cheaper way to the the young head and the gothic head. If I collect empire coins again, I would want a Straits Settlements dollar. Both the reverse and obverse are very nice.

If I were ever to collect world coins, these Empire coins of India would definitely tick the box! Especially when you think about how far back the British/Indian ‘relationship’ goes through the East India Company!

Not a variety - just a repair.

Hello, I recently bought an almost uncirculated 1862 uk penny and when inspecting it -noticed that the R in Victoria wasn't quite right. It had no lower serifs and is struck over an R with a shorter downstroke. On looking for further coins of the same type -I could only see one which was sold by London Coins on 5/6/22 in Auction 177 Lot 1846 who described the anomoly as very clear and very unusual ! This coin is an 'unlisted variety' by both Freeman and Gouby and I just wondered if there is anyone else in this forum that has seen this particular anomoly ? Also, should I be informing anyone that this is a second coin of this type to be found....? Thanks JB ps I tried to upload a fuller picture of this coin but there seems to be restrictions....

The Russian to English translation is: "I would appreciate help in identifying this coin and determining its authenticity, as well as assessing whether it is a modern cast or a reproduction. Weight: 3.2 g. I have attached photos of both sides, detailed shots of the portrait and inscription, as well as the edge. Could anyone help identify the ruler, read the inscriptions on the coin, clarify the date and denomination, and comment on any signs that might indicate a modern counterfeit? Thank you for your help."

😆😆 Fair play, they managed to acquire a lot of legend info from a coin that’s quite so battered! I can’t quite fathom what his/her D over N over T in DNS is all about? I’m sure he/she knows what they’re doing (quite literally) 😳

Just in case you were disappointed at missing this one, he has sold two and has another two remaining...

I would message the seller, but with a feedback of zero and such a cock up of a listing I cannot imagine they would respond.

I also noticed a spelling mistake in the seller description…‘certified’ has been spelled incorrectly. I’m pretty certain that either the buyer or seller would need to be certified?

Hi, first topic from me here. I believe that all obverse 6 has the colon after the D from F:D: flawed, but I did found one with a perfect round colon, the flaw can still be seen below of it, like i it was re punched?, this is the only one I have ever seen like this. Is this a new or micro variety?
