I usually listen to Radio 4 or opera while I'm working but today it'll be his 1970s albums in chronological order. Like so many others I became a fan on seeing that famous performance of Starman on TOTP in 1972. One of the most important UK creatives of modern times.

Brings back so many memories. So sad, the premature loss of a creative genius. I'll be dusting off the vinyl today as well.

Just been watching him at live aid singing heroes 1985 for those that remember it.

My wife doesnt often get a tear in her eye ,but for anyone who remembers how much of a nice guy he seemed to be ....A  true legend.

Worth a watch and sorry if it sounds a bit sentimental , but a true hero

My wife's very upset too. She's just returned home from school (early finish today, not because of the news), and I'm told many other members of staff are equally saddened.

I guess, for a lot of us, his death represents a part of our youth lost.

I'll be watching Cracked Actor and the Ziggy farewell film this evening.

Thank you so much.

Maybe i am getting softer as i get older but had a tear in my eye aswel.

Thats quality and looked at numerous others today like berlin 2002 ,we sometimes forget how much people like bowie had so much of an influence.

For the young ones pastel coloured suits and jew cut pants were quite new;)

He was my hero and not for just one day.My girls were brought up on his music. They didn't have a choice.

An end of an era but his talent and music will live on forever.:(

Superhero, Mick, what a musical journey that man has had, wonderful! Nearly as flamboyant as you were in the 70's! ;)

In such an early song
I've heard a rumour from Ground Control...
Oh no, don't say it's true

They got a message from the Action Man
"I'm happy. Hope you're happy, too.
I've loved. All I've needed: love.
Sordid details following."

The shrieking of nothing is killing me
Just pictures of Jap girls in synthesis
And I ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet is glowing

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh, no, not again

I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy. Hope you're happy, too."
One flash of light
But no smoking pistol

I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue,
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now

My mama said, "To get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom."

RIP David Bowie

Apart from all the truly innovative, and downright entertaining, work he gave us himself if it hadn't been for him so many of us would've remained ignorant of the Velvets, Stooges, Mott, Jacques Brel etc. etc. His influence on us Liverpool kids of the 1970s can't be overstated. We all, boys and girls, both, wanted to be like him.

Here's a recently rediscovered performance of The Jean Genie from a 1973 episode of Top of the Pops. LIVE, remember, not mimed. Outstanding.
