Paulus Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 On the left is the example they used to show of a Fine early milled large silver coin (courtesy of Tony Clayton's Coins-of-the-UK site, where it is credited to Spink)On the right is the corresponding image from Spink 2015 (taken with my aye phone pointed at the page, so apologies)Both pics are pretty ropey, but there is a clear difference in grade, don't you think? Coinery Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I'd say the best part of half a grade up myself! Quote
azda Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 If you want a true price guide then look through previous auctions from this year, Spink is only a guide and not the bible of what a coins value is Quote

declanwmagee Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 (edited) Do you think they thought as deeply as we do about the changes that they have made? Or are we reading too much into them? Edited December 17, 2014 by declanwmagee Quote

pokal02 Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 There were 2 James II Crowns in the Spink auction today, graded F & GF. The F is somewhere between the 2014 Spink Coins of England F and the 2015 - I'd still say F+ or even GF myself. (Maybe I'm a bit lenient on James II coins generally - it's not a reign, due to its brevity, where anyone would see that many coins). It would be interesting to know why the changes in the book were made, but I expect we'll never know. ( This forum, I think, is divided on whether F & VF grades have got more lenient over the years or stayed constant, but no-one thinks they've become less lenient!) Quote

There's definitely more hair and wreath detail on the second, but the bottom looks a bit worse, and much of the rest is about the same. If you were grading on hair/wreath alone, you would say a good half grade difference, but overall, I'd say it was probably the difference between F and GF, i.e. perhaps 1/3 of a grade?Having said that, the first photo looks as though the tones have all been 'flattened' to show the detail, where the second looks more like a straight photograph with all the dark areas making the essential detail less easy to make out. TomGoodheart Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I'm being very cheeky here but I wondered if anyone with the latest copy would be kind enough to scan the page(s) with the Tower shillings of Charles I on them for me? I am interested to see which coins have been chosen to illustrate the series this time, so a decent dpi resolution would be appreciated. I only need those (2?) pages. And of course the scan would just be for my own private research, so don't believe there would be any copyright issues to worry about ... pm or email me if you like. Thanks! . Quote
azda Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) Of you give me an hour Richard i'll sort out a scan for ya old bean Unless someone beats me too it in the meantime Edited December 27, 2014 by azda Quote
