I suspect some but not many. It's the sort of coin that many will have one of but that's it. Others may disagree.

I don't collect gold, but if I did, I think the guinea would do it for me, much more than the sov. There's something romantic and olde world about the guinea.

I collect guineas by type. They seem to have very high prices for an item that most people don't appear to collect. I suspect most people buy one or two they like and that's it.

The rarity ratings for guineas and prices in the various catalogues are wildly out (IMHO).

never found an example of, yet one slipped through the London Sales for £3000.00 in 2004

Yes Spink have told me they will be producing an "English Gold Coins" book or EGC to match their ESC book. Hopefully that will identify the rarities a bit better. Don't know when though, I will ask next time I am in there.

A new version of ESC itself is due very soon, looks much better with loads more pictures. Hopefully the rarity ratings in that will be brought nearer the mark, too

I suspect a 1674 5 Guineas in fine would be £10K. Samuel King was the only person I have ever heard of who collected 5 guinea pieces by date.

I have noticed a real discrepancy in grading these in the market. I know that can be said about a lot of coins but it seems particularly so.

The pricing is VERY optimistic indeed, isn't it. Spink quotes £150 for Fine. I think you're right in your estimate, probably even less. If you want it you could always make a cheeky offer, especially if you wait until near the end of the listing time when it becomes obvious to the seller no one is going to pay the opening price.

Paulus - It's simple really, I've basically looked at available stock, got the Spinks code and created an Excel spreadsheet with all the sales going back over the last five years. I didn't really see the point in going back much further etc. Basically you record the coin code, year, condition, auction house, date, lot number and other pertinent details as well as the sales price. There are a couple of formulas in there to add buyers premiums and related costs etc depending on the relevent auction house.

You can then see a real world price as opposed to what is in the Spinks catalogue etc.

I've only done a few coins that I'm interested in so far, but I'm sure it will grow into a worthwhile resource in time as and when I've added more data etc. I'm sure many of the dealers on here have something very similar, but likely with far more useful data than mine at present.
