LotsofCoppers Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Hi everyone I recently posted this coin in the CoinTalk website forums but haven't had much response yet so I thought I would give it a try here. This coin is very lightweight - about 3.8g. and as you can see in the photos it is very thin and looks to have the rim missing. Is it an error or somehow created through imaginative post-minting work? Thank you! Quote
Nordle11 Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Looks like a abnormally thin planchet going from the second picture, this would explain the coin still showing detail but with the appearance of a particularly weak strike.By 1937 the designs on both ob. and re. and the striking processes are pretty much up to spec, so I would guess this away at just being a planchet at the time of mint. Rob Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Most likely partially dissolved in an acidic solution, whether as a lost coin, or wilfully as a practical experiment/prank. Quote

Rob Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Discolouration from what? You are removing the surface toning and metal, to expose......metal. Any discolouration would have to be from whatever environmental conditions were present. Quote
VickySilver Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Double the opinion - this is the appearance of an acid dipped coin. Quote
LotsofCoppers Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 Well that's a neat trick anyway! Thanks all very much for the help Quote
Accumulator Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Yep, I have one somewhere too. Almost certainly a bath in acid. Quote
Gary D Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Definitely acid bath, maybe left in a glass of coca cola to see if it really can dissolve coins Quote
Peckris Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I concur - looks classic acid attack (thin, lightweight, super-blurred shallow detail). Quote
