Hello everyone,

Ive got this misstrike 1899 penny in CGS slab.

It looks a bit different to other slabs.

Fonts are smaller GB on top instead of Great Britain.

UIN is a bit weird too. Its W1274 but when i type it on CGS website theres no match.

Anyone knows why is that?

CGS Labels start with 000 normally, but as Declan says, a picture of the slab and UIN would help

I looked into the possibility of fake slabs a while ago. As far as I can see there's nothing to prevent it happening and in my case the slab and label seemed perfect but there was a single but glaring error on the coin itself.

Please do go into it, and provide photos if possible! We're always up for updating our knowledge in these areas.

I think the W stood for world coins when CGS first started, then mint errors were added to the W, now they all have just a number attached world and errors inclusive upto around 29000.The w1274 to w1280 aren't available so might just be a computor error.Give them a quick phone call just to verify the slab.

I would echo Benny's advice, I can't find it on their site with or without the W ... they may be busy at the mo with few staff and an upcoming auction (not to mention my coins to completely complete!), but they will take the call and answer your question!

6-7 weeks now since I sent them in and 2-3 weeks sitting at the final stage ... Ms Cetin (sic) phoned me 4 weeks ago to clarify something and told me to expect around 6 weeks, but the deal as we know is now up to 90 days ... maybe it's this mysterious 3rd grader up north someone mentioned that delays things? Sure is a factor for repeat business, even though I am not desperate to have them back for resale ...

Yes i can't See how they'll get repeat Business if they're now charging more for a longer turnaround. Usually its the other Way around, they Charge more for a QUICKER turnaround. Stupid business sense in my eyes, even PCGS Paris will send your coins back in 14 days at a cost of €30 i think it is, so a cheaper and quicker alternative. I think CGS have Shot themselves in the foot with their new tarif and 90 Day turnaround.

I was going to slab a few more but have now given up on that idea, it wouöd have to be a serious rarity for me to go to CGS now

To be fair I had asked them to re-examine my 1707 Plumes Shilling to see if they agreed it was an 'M over inverted M in MAG' *soon after I submitted the coins), and I got this reply just this morning:

Hello Paul
Thank you for the e-mail.
UIN 28559 has been re-examined and although there is evidence of an underlying letter to the right of the upright of the M in MAG, the underlying letter is not conclusive, and in the absence of the remaining parts of the inverted M or any other letter being visible we are unable to attribute this as a new type.
Many thanks

I think DNW are agents for PCGS,so the coin(s) can be sent there first. They sort out all the rest, and send the coin back to you,not sure of the price difference if any.
