azda Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Opinions of this crown, the REV legend looks suspicious, like the Northumberland Shillings where the tops are missing off the serifs..................Use the magnified view for a better look, also the OBV looks as though it has a few cast holes?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XXXX-RARE-1696-WILLAIM-III-OCTAVO-SILVER-CROWN-5-UK-BRITAIN-COIN-VF-gVF-S-3472-/230850856924?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item35bfc887dc Quote

There do appear to be a few pin-pricks, but they can also exist on the genuine article, so not conclusive. Also, I've had a couple of these earlier crowns, where the ends of the legends have faded/disappeared towards the rim. The edge looks weird (seam-like), however, though I'm assuming this is the cut-out software, rather than the coin itself. For me, just to put some reverse psychology on it, if I was wanting to buy it as a good-quality counterfeit, I wouldn't get too excited about it until I had it in hand! Coinery Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I know this one's a little more corroded/pitted, but it would probably have been good in its day I reckon. Quote

I don't think it appears obviously cast but still a pretty grim looking coin. Quote

Peckris Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Looks too bright and appears cleaned.Nasty.Agreed - it really doesn't look 'right'. It could be fake, or it could be just a pallid genuine. Even if genuine, the price is absurd. I'd want one clearly better than VF for £450, and that one just isn't. Drab drab drab. Quote
Rob Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Totally drab as said previously. If a cast, then the edge would probably be plain, and/or there would have to be the remains of the sprue. If you can add the edge reading to a coin, I think it unlikely to be a cast. Quote
