All of which are highly recommended, and there are others on here ...

Bugger, classic example, I forgot M Gouby (remind me of his numismatic status again?)! Happy New Year, Paul (I may have wished you that already)!

Time for a sharp exit, me thinks! :)

And you forgot Bob as well! Although I can sort of forgive you because he is mainly a Penny man and I know that doesn't float your boat Stuart!

Sorry for the slight bump on an oldish thread. But is ebay that bad of a place to buy from then?

I take it that ebay isnt advisable to buy from unless youre very in the know?

Personally I think it is 'Sellers beware' on eBay, tons of protection for buyers, and sellers dread negative feedback ... beware high grade coins without lots of hi-res pics, expensive historic coins without provenance, anything from China and certain other known replica exporting locations, and much more to be found on here. There are still bargains to be had for sure.

I never thought of it that way.

I think for the time being I'd rather stick with well known people away from eBay.

And remember, we're a friendly lot here, so if you do spot something on ebay (or anywhere else really) and want a second opinion, just post a photo and ask. Of course, we all make mistakes to start with (or for a long time afterwards in my case!) but that's part of the learning process. Coin collecting isn't just acquiring the coins, but also the knowledge about them, so it's a long-term thing. Well, it is if you're more patient than I am anyway!

Quite. It's both 'Sellers beware' and 'Buyers beware' on eBay - sellers suffer through fraudulent buyers claiming non-receipt etc, but buyers suffer through poorly-graded and even blatantly counterfeit items (about which eBay will do NOTHING), and shill bidders, who are supposedly illegal and against all eBay policies, terms and conditions.. but as we all know, it goes on. However, as others have said, there are plenty of good honest sellers who have some very nice coins for sale and will willingly refund you if you're not happy.

Tom - hear, hear!

Thanks for the plug, and thanks to everybody who has bought coins from me this year. Rest assured that you have kept the wife off the streets for another year...

Yes, sorry, Bob! That is the problem when you adhoc on a bottle of whiskey!

I think I'm going to knock up a word document in the future for occasions such as these! :)
