pies Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 so my book on grading still hasnt arrived so im making a more educated guess on the gradesso from left to rightEF VF EF FINE Really need to sort this uploading of pic lark im not happy at all the 1910 coin should be alot more golden than it does and it looks like its been cleaned but in the hand it certainly hasnt I shall have to try my camera and the sizes have gone to pot on the second 1902 obverse it looks like it has a long curved scratch it dosent its a hair on the scanner any opinions am i close Quote
Peckris Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 The two 1902 shillings are certainly at least EF.The 1910 is better than VF I'd say - there is some wear to the hair (always the first to go), the remainder shows little. I'd say GVF or perhaps even a bit better. The 1905 is less than Fine - I'd rate it Fair. Quote
pies Posted June 8, 2012 Author Posted June 8, 2012 im a bit confuddled where the grade fair comes in im working onpoorfinevery fineextra fineuncfdc   Quote

Hope that helps!! Quote
Peckris Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 im a bit confuddled where the grade fair comes in im working onpoorfinevery fineextra fineuncfdc   You'd be forgiven, the way some dealers jump straight to Fine for everything below VF.Fair is better than Poor, but less than Fine. For example, if there's no hair left on the portrait it's Fair. If the main elements of design (e.g. the lion face) is worn flat, it's Fair. To be Fair, the legend has to be completely readable. On your better picture, I'd rate the '05 Fair+ but it's definitely not Fine. My 1869 penny just about rates as Fair, but only just. Quote
pies Posted June 8, 2012 Author Posted June 8, 2012 Fair comment Im actually quite pleased that im not miles apart in my very basic grading, being no more than one full grade away is better than i was last week the 1910 is currently my fav coin it looks the muts nuts in the hand not a high grade but lots of eye appeal Quote
1949threepence Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 EF - VF - GEF - Fair to near fineWould be my assessment Quote
Peckris Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Would the above florin grade as GVF ta Yes, I'd say that was a fair grading. GVF I mean. Not Fair Quote
Red Riley Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Yes, I'd say that was a fair grading. GVF I mean. Not Fair I'd go along with that. Quote
