Descartes Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Does anybody know what the world's largest coin ever in circulation was? Somebody told me it was the fifty-CFP Franc at 32.9 mm?I wonder if there has been anything to rival our fabulous Cartwheel Twopence in weight?Descartes Quote

Coinery Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 My link They must have been in circulation at some point?! One for the cabinet! Actually, better make that two, showing the obverse AND the reverse, as I can't imagine you'd ever see the other side again! Quote
davidrj Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 My link They must have been in circulation at some point?! Never considered these to be coins, more a statement of wealth or the equivalent of bullion in a bank vaultI'd go for Swedish plate moneyDavid Quote

Leo Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 (edited) My 2 cents... or something bigger: Silver: XVII century Segovia 50 reales, 'cincuentín', a bit borderline circulation coin as it was minted only for royal or business gifts. Over 170g, 77mm diameter. Fabulous workmanship for the time, as all coins from the Segovia mint Gold: 100 reales, 'centén', also early XVII century Segovia mint as well. Similar dimensions as cincuentín, 340g of gold. Biggest and baddest Spanish coin, very few minted If you want one, stash a couple of millions and wait... But of course, none of these are strictly speaking circulating coins, unlike a cartwheel pence, so I don't think they qualify. Edited January 4, 2017 by Leo Quote
Matteo95 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 The circulation of the genoese series of silver scudi larghi and gold doppie are well documented . They have all the same diameter,( 60 mm. ) while is the weight that changes .. http://numismatica-italiana.lamoneta.it/moneta/W-GE31/21 Quote
Mr T Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I remember reading or hearing about a 1000 mohur coin (15,000 rupees?) from India which was supposed to have existed in the 1600s I think. I doubt it circulated as such. Interesting reading anyway: http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00routesdata/1600_1699/jahangir/hugecoin/hugecoin.html Quote

mrbadexample Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) This is the 10 daler plate (think this one's in the Stockholm museum). As far as I understand it, these were mostly used as shipping ballast to exchange for goods at the proposed destination (or wherever the copper price was best), although the lower denominations did circulate. Much of the Swedish plate in the market today (about 3000 pieces) was recovered from the wreck of the Nicobar in 1987. I don't know where mine came from, but it's almost certainly marine salvage judging by the condition. Still weighs in at 237.5g though. Edited January 8, 2017 by mrbadexample 1 Quote
