Very true, When the children were younger we had great fun collecting the best coin they could find in our change and collecting sets of coins etc. Sadly they could only find coins in the decimal age but when I was young we would have fun finding Victorian coins in our change.

I had access to my parents "CARD" tin and got reasonable quality date runs.

I also fondly remember trips to the coastal arcades and always came home with a handful of Vickies.

I'd forgotten about the arcades. At the end of Southport pier there is an arcade which has old machines. If you pay they give you some old coins to use on the machine. Maybe fun to have a look at the coins instead.

I've got good memories of Southport (the Prince of Wales Hotel)where a Company I was working for at the time sent their staff on courses.

There was also some dodgy pick up joints (The Scarisbrick?) :)

So you were the guy who tried to pick up my wife at the Scarisbrick? I take her to more upmarket places nowadays...

Does anyone know what the most expensive coin sold to date is?

The 1933 St Gaudens Gold Double Eagle I believe.

A mere $7.5m. If you like that sort of thing.

And as for me, I don't spend any income on coins, it's all out of the budget my wife gave me in a generous moment with birthday present and Christmas money added in. Which is restricting at times, but probably if I was given a free hand I'd just keep spending. :P

Wow that is a lot of money... must be something about 1933...

Tom your wife sounds like me when I give my husband his Christmas / birthday allowance to spend on tech! :)

Console yourself that British coins are cheaper than US coins. The most expensive was the Edward III double florin that made £460K in June 2006.

That's because ours was not in a little plastic box

Yes, I remember the Scarisbrick in the early 1960's - is it still the same?

Yes it's still there. Not sure whether it has changed much since being a local I don't go there much but I'll be walking past it today. I love Southport for its seaside feel. Much nicer shopping there than in Liverpool, but obviously Liverpool has more shops, and the new Liverpool One is great. Just need a coin dealer in Southport for me to browse in.

Ack - on a nostalgic visit back in 2010 I wasn't that impressed, though I'm sure it fills a need. I felt much more comfortable back in Hope St, Church St and Mathew St. I love what they've done with the Ally Dock though.

A beautiful coin but i'm baffled as to how well preserved it is after being underground so long. Did anyone read about the WWI trench the french dug up last week while excavating

A new road. Bodies, timbers, weappns preserved, realy interesting to read about it and see the pictures.

Sounds interesting, got a link? Saw a field of metal detectorists today in a field by our house. Was tempted to stop the car and see what they had found, but the field was a bit muddy....

Gold comes out the ground exactly the same as it went in regardless of time...it is escaping the plough damage that is the fun part!! :)

so.....back to the original question,

totally irrelevant..........theres a wide spread of incomes on here and a wide range of those who wish to spend their cash or virtual cash on coins or loose women.

this question is as relevant as to how much money we spend on petrol each month.

but anyhow...........5% on coins, 5% on petrol and 90% on loose women :D

crap isnt it?????.....how about a proper question on coins? :)

Personally I prefer a tight woman....I get that free as Mrs Peter controls my coin funds. ;)

I don’t think the original question was totally irrelevant. It just reiterates how accessible coin collecting is and that the enjoyment gained is not necessarily proportional to the amount of money spent. IE it is affordable regardless of income. :)

Perhaps what the original poster really meant to ask was

Do you think coin collecting can become too addictive and do any of you feel in danger of spending a higher proportion of your income on coins than you feel you should?
