Just picked this one up, an 1826 high grade Penny. Nice grade, but the REV looked odd, i've only got the gallery picture for now, but the REX in the legend looks like its all over something

The R in REX looks like its over another R and the X has something going through the bottom of it, the E looks as the its inverted and there's something poking out of the downward leg, the wwhole REX looks wrong. Anyhoo, here's 2 gallery pix, 1 of both sides and a cut out of the REV, you may or may not see what i'm looking at.

The REV cutout

It will interesting to see a clearer image once you have it in hand, I have generally found GeoIV to have very few Errors/variaties.

Missing bottom Serifs to the Ns of Britainniar, highlighted by another Forum member a few years ago, is the only GeoIV Penny Legend variety I can honestly recount.

The X can be explained by the 2 bottom serifs perhaps being joined, but the E i'm not so sure about, definately something poking out of the middle, hence my thought of an inverted E, but as you said Chingford, in hand pix and we'll get a lot better view of whats going on.

The amount of times I have squinted at a photo, or thought I saw something

I can see what you are saying, but 99.99% of the time it is your eyes or a combination of lighting and marks on the surface confusing things, but you just never know....... ;)

Will just have to wait until it arrives i suppose.

My apologies Peck, best i could do with the dealers gallery pictures, plus i enlarged them for some of the older farts of the forum who might be losing their sight :)

I think you are going to find that it is just due to the terrible picture, its all fuzzy.

The thread Chingford mentions is probably this one but it deals with William IIII pennies, in particular the 1834.

I spotted the REX from a dealers gallery picture which wasn't enlarged, i've only enlarged here because it was only 22kb, so it's not my imagination. The 2 serifs at the bottom of the X have a curve going up towards the leg of the X, the E has something poking out from the vertical leg of the E and the R looks over an R.

I know sometimes pictures can play tricks on you, but with 3 different letters, and only of the REX, why not the rest of them to? As i said, i spotted this from a 22kb dealers gallery picture.

The original gallery picture, now look at the middle of the E, the left hand side, something is poking out, the X at the bottom, and the top of the R

That's the thread I was referring to, I have found Geo Iv 1825 & 1826 Pennies similar to the WIIII shown,

LOL I've done this too! Enlarged dealer's pics, peered at them. Inverted the colours to see if the detail looks any better. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

To be honest, I think this dealer's pic is quite heavily pixelated. The way the colours in the fields look just isn't natural. Maybe it was enlarged beforehand? I seem to remember that if I converted a bitmap to a jpeg it does that. Either way it's just impossible to be certain I'm afraid.

I imagine the coin is on it's way to you Dave? So we'll look forward to some good photos in a few days, yes? :D

It should be here by Next weekend, easter holidays here Friday/Monday, so nothing moves in Germany, so i won't expect it until at least late Next week

But what i was saying about the REV legend, its only REX that looks iffy, if it was so pixelated surely the rest of the legend would look the same, but to me at least it looks nö different, maybe i'm trying to convincr myself here but i went for it on the strength of a normal gallery pic and not an enlarged one.

Will have to wait on its arrival.

Forget the "is it a variety or isn't it" Dave - it's a nice looking penny, well worth it in its own right
