There aren't any gold 1902 pennies. If it is gold coloured it has either been plated or chemically cleaned to give this colour.

what sort of coins could you buy that are rare if you on a small budget

This kind. Cost me £18. That to me is small budget, but there are those here that would consider that expensive.

Doesn't look much does it? And that's why I picked it to show you, you see. Because in order to know that it's rare you need to know your coins: what's normal and what's not. And of course, if I want to make a profit, which is what people usually mean when they say 'rare', I will have to sell it to someone who also knows why it's unusual. And there's the problem. If everyone knew rare coins you can buy on a small budget then they'd all be buying them up!

What you don't want is 'ebay rare'. In other words, all those 'rare' Darwin £2 coins (if you see more than 3 of anything on an ebay page it simply can't be that rare!)

To be honest, as a beginner I suggest you forget rare. Go to the library and look at a book on coin collecting. Ideally, pick one on World coins and one on British. And see what appeals to you. That's how I started. Got a book called The Splendid Shilling and started collecting shillings because I liked the look of them. Find something you like the look of and take it from there. But the liklihood of a beginner finding anything very rare or valuable is slim. And if you don't know much about coins, are you likely to recognise a rarity? So take your time. Try junk shops, antique stalls. Don't spend too much until you know your subject or else you risk throwing your money away. And enjoy your hobby!

Only collect Edward VII pennies in high grade (EF or better) but you need quite a lot of experience to judge the better examples. It might be better to wait a while, or go for VF examples to whet your appetite? (You can pick up most dates in VF for less than a fiver, 1902 even less).

Don't just look at the value.The history bit is far nicer...when you can afford a Queen Anne farthing or a 1717 farthing you have arrived....hang on I'm here

That's my favourite book on coins, IMO it knocks everything else ever written about coins into a cocked hat.

I do like shillings and bun heads are very expensive, I'm having a bit of a crisis at the moment, I do admit.

I've been quietly dabbling in colonial banknotes from the Arabian peninsula and North Africa, Freddy.

Partly because it's an interesting time there, partly because British pennies seem so overheated and partly because I've enjoyed researching the history behind the notes, I've learned a lot.

I did put a pair of 1960's Yemeni notes up a while ago, but the entire forum blanked me.

I think most collectors now start off collecting anything and everything - I certainly did.

I had best luck in Car Boot Sales (in summer when they have the best turnout, search the internet for your local ones), antiques and charity shops and eBay (If you only have cash you can buy preloaded credit cards in WHSmith for use on the Net).

actually rare coins can be found cheaply anywhere

i got an 1888 groat in a bulk buy with a 1826 halfpenny and 1864 penny (crossiet 4) for a fiver

a 1875 H with 3 1912h and 1 1918h for a couple of quid

as well as a £20 bulk lot of 200 odd coins which contained a single coin worth £40-60

those 2 off ebay

i can get worn bunheads at my dealers for 5-25p (dependant on how much wear) and if they dont check the dates.. even the rare ones

thanks im quite happy with my 1943 Netherlands Indies 50 Gulden Note its in good nic as well so it might be a good investment with bit luck.
