SionGilbey Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Hello all! For a while I've browsed across the forum and site for information and a read but only recently I've made an account and started posting. I come from sunny Wales and spend too many evenings collecting, storing and entering into my database a multitude of world coins (currently I have one thousand one hundred and forty-six) Last year I acquired a metal detector with visions of digging up giant hordes of coins from the ground of the 700 odd year old town in which I reside but alas after days of detecting I found 2 rusty 2ps and a dozen beer cans. I've searched for coins in antiques markets in shops in Nice, Monaco, Villefranche, Italy and exotic Swansea and have built up my collection for around 6 years (a complete newbie to some of you with half a century collecting under your belts!).Sorry about waffling on and I hope to speak to you all soon! Colin G. Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Welcome to the forum, that is some quantity of coins you have, do you collect certain Countries/dates, or is it a world type set? Quote
TomGoodheart Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Welcome Sion. 1146, eh? Well, that beats the ..er .. 63 coins I count as my 'collection'. Of course that doesn't include the coins I've picked out of change which probably number a hundred or two. But that's what makes this place interesting. All different interests and stuff! Quote

SionGilbey Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) Welcome to the forum, that is some quantity of coins you have, do you collect certain Countries/dates, or is it a world type set? It's a bit of a muddle really... I started off wanting to collect silver threepences 1845-1937 but after buying the local coin place's stock of about 11 of them and 2 in a handful of car boot sales I decided to branch out until I found myself collecting pennies from 1797 to 1967 (originally I collected from 1800 but I couldn't resist buying a cartwheel penny and twopence going cheap!), 20th century Halfpennies, farthings from 1820s-, and an aim of a handful of coins from every country in the world... and anything that I know is worth a bit more than what they're selling it for!I'm also after a coin from the Aberystwyth mint but I have yet to find for less than £170 (I'm looking for a bargain). And Peck - Diolch yn fawr! Rob Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I'm also after a coin from the Aberystwyth mint but I have yet to find for less than £170 (I'm looking for a bargain). That isn't a bad price. Unless you get a damaged one, most are not in poor condition. A relative lack of circulation means that most examples come up around the VF mark - and are certainly commoner than in fine. So a groat or less likely a threepence starting at around the £200 level is a reasonable amount to pay. Quote
Peckris Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Welcome to the forum, Sion .....Peck ~ I never realised you could speak Welsh... I was brung up in Liverpool - the number of times we holidayed in Wales and passed the "Croeso i Cymru" sign - I can hardly NOT know what it means! And Peck - Diolch yn fawr! You're welcome Sion Quote
Red Riley Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 My father was stationed in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch during the war and he taught me how to say it, but that is about the limit of my Welsh.Anyway, welcome to the forum Sion. Quote

I don't really collect hammered coins though, and I'm really after it for historical value, so a damaged one would do me fine, even if it is only worth it's melting value. Quote
azda Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Welcome Sion, i used to live in Cardiff for a while then up the Rhondda near Tonypandy, nice part of the world, although the Welsh dislike the English, which me and a friend of mine found out while out at the local nightclub one night on Cardiff Queen Street, us being Scottish were quite confused but we still kicked their arses Quote
azda Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Very nice story! Lol, yes, but it was 20 years ago ish Quote

In Liverpool the myth (was it?) was that South Walesians - especially in The Valleys - were friendly, especially to fellow-working class Brits. But on the other hand, perhaps everyone hates the Scots Quote
