Auction 1 Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 There is an interesting coin auction coming up in the West Midlands on Saturday 11th December. There are thousands of coins in over 200 lots at Fieldings Auctioneers. A collection formed during the 1950's and has lay undisturbed in boxes until now, hammered milled , also gold proof sets and bank notes. The catalogue is illustrated on line www.fieldingsauctioneers.co.ukHave a look, lots to view. But sadly the pictures are woefully inadequate for me to make any kind of intelligent bid, so I will pass on this occasion. Quote

Rob Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 One to avoid unless you can view in person or alternatively put in a very safe low bid. Unless good images are supplied, nobody with any sense is going to risk being burned. Provincial auctions can have little gems hidden away in the bulk lots, but most people never win on the lottery either. Quote

1949threepence Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Very interesting. Thanks for that.Who knows what delights might be discovered in such a box.Do you think it’s still possible to find a gem in a box of so called delights in this day and age. Even the Oxfam shops etc know the value of there books and wares. It's possible, yes. Unlikely, I admit, but possible.Maybe I'm too much of a "dream on" type of guy Quote
Auction 1 Posted December 4, 2010 Author Posted December 4, 2010 Yes you really need to come and have a good look, some of the copper coins are exceptional in the mixed lots and there is a great lot of almost UNC tokens. There are some real gems in here Quote

Although I'm not desperately far from the location of the auction, I really wouldn't fancy travelling there in this crap weather. Quote
Peter Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 The images are so poor I won't bother with a 250 mile round trip...why the venders haven't gone to a proven coin auctioneers baffles me. Quote
Fubar Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 The images are so poor I won't bother with a 250 mile round trip...why the venders haven't gone to a proven coin auctioneers baffles me.Could well be a probate or house clearance sale.I do some work for the local auction house and we get quite a bit of stuff like this.Neither the time nor the inclination to go through it all except very quickly to make sure there are no gems amongst the glass. Most auction houses have a minimum lot value around twenty five or thirty quid and won't accept anything they think will sell for less. Except when they have no choice such as house clearances etc.An auction lot that sells for ten quid will mean the vendor gets about four. It's not only buyer beware but seller beware. Also all auction estimates are from one third to one half of retail value. Most items will find their own level in an auction these days.Just as these have been found today most auctions are listed on t'internet so the customer base has widened considerably.Kris Quote

I got an email from them last week that is obviously going out to all coin dealers in the UK. Quote
Auction 1 Posted December 4, 2010 Author Posted December 4, 2010 Look - Thank you for all your interest and replies. What you have to remember is that we are not specialist coin auctioneers but more tradtional and just happen to have a large collection.Ok so the images maybe not up to the standard that coin collectors are used to and yes a few emails have been sent out to various dealers, but as we have few buyers locally I just thought that it would help a few interested parties maybe add to their collection as there are so many lots. There are no condition reports as buyers must satisfy themselves before purchase, anyway those im sure that will view will not be disappointed! Auction 1 Posted December 4, 2010 Author Posted December 4, 2010 By the way I am not the vendor as it has come from a deceased estate Quote
Peckris Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Ok so the images maybe not up to the standard that coin collectors are used to ... buyers must satisfy themselves before purchaseFirst, I appreciate this is a genuine approach, unlike some of the spam we get, so thanks for that. But, it's not a question of "images not up to the standard we're used to" - it's just that as potential buyers we really do need to be able to "satisfy ourselves before purchase". Without good images (such as is nearly always uploaded on eBay for any coin worth its salt) we simply cannot do that. With good images of the higher value or better items, you might be surprised at some of the bids you attract. But most of us can't afford to bid on "the hope of a surprise or two"! Quote
azda Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I agree, maybe the auction house should have waited to have the coins looked at and photographed properly, the outcome might have been different had high res images been uploaded. As you can see auction1, many of us are thinking the same thing here, and that's just 1 forum from however many you've posted the same link to, so perhaps you'll get the same response in the other places which to my mind would be a clear indicator that you might be rushing sales through and perhaps not obtaining the best prices for the vendor. Auction 1 Posted December 5, 2010 Author Posted December 5, 2010 This is the only forum that I have posted on, im afraid time is always against you and it would have taken weeks to photograph all the coins and the images posted are only an indication of what is in each lot in the auction. I appreciate that many of you are long distances. If there are any lots that you are interested in then do mailand request for extra images and we will provide better images and email them direct to you and answer any questions.I trust this helps and thank you for your comments. Rob Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 It's still a non starter. So many bulk lots and a maximum of 2 hours viewing minus the time taken to register unless you want to make two trips on successive days. Quote
Auction 1 Posted December 5, 2010 Author Posted December 5, 2010 Up to youRegistration takes just a few minutes. We have to do bulk lots as we would be here until next Christmas. All I can say is happy to help any other interested potential purchasers with extra details or images as before. Quote
Auction 1 Posted December 8, 2010 Author Posted December 8, 2010 Interest already ,I think it will take quite a few hours to view, so if you are coming please allow enough time if you are looking at the whole collection.Thank you Quote
