The Coins You Have

In Hussulo's thread about the creation of the website I offered to image some of my early British stuff, but I realised some of this stuff has been languishing in some forlorn safe box in a bank somewhere for years unvisited. What a pity that I must resort to banking my coins and not loving them at home because of the fear of an unannounced seizure by some loser.

I can think of one of my Scottish groats, the star on sceptre variety, which I have not seen in about 10 years now.

Another reason I collect circulated (cheap) coins! Unless I can have my coins 'to hand' I will not collect.

Your comments about keeping coins (valuables) put away in safe keeping is always prudent. But I

would have difficulty in not visiting my collection often.

This reminds me of a coin I bought last year. A London dealer bought and sold the coin in the

late 1890's and then again in about 1942. It was sold in 1943. The gentleman died in the 1940's

and his estate had his collection valued in the 80's and put back in the vault. Only to finally come

out again last year.

I came to the conclusion long ago that I am only the keeper and as long as they make me happy

then I shall continue to keep them. But I want others to enjoy and love them as much as I when

that time comes.

I was speaking to a local dealer at an antiques fair a couple of months back and along the conversation somewhere he happened to mention he has a friend who regularly buys from Baldwin’s (I think he said).

The gentleman who as far as I gathered doesn’t live in London, but he uses Baldwin’s to keep his bought coins in a safe.

So he buys coins from them and they store them for him (probably for a small surcharge), anyway I find this a little odd. Storing your coins far from home.

I would like to have access to my coins to look at them when I choose. There are coins I haven't seen for a couple of months but I know I could if I wanted to by nipping down to my local bank.

I would love to have a secure walk in safe in my house, now that would be great!

In that vain the cheap coins are arguably more enjoyable. I have 5.000 older pre-1959 cents lying on the floor in my office. Nobody would take them as they weigh about 18 kilogrammes. At least I can play Midas, even if they are a bit dark for gold.

Yeah. I got a safety deposit box at the bank specifically to store my coins. But since I have accumulated them I like being able to look at them frequently. Sometimes a pic just isn't good enough. Besides it costs a few quid for access each time I want the bank to let me see my stuff.

So now the bank just has my Dad's medals and some small pieces of jewellery. And my home insurance policy covers the rest. I had to provide valuations (which I got from the local BANS Numismatic Society for free) but the cost was OK. In fact after changing insurers I saved £100!

As for a walk-in safe - I'd just like to be able to get into my garage!

If I can't keep it at home I don't want to collect it.

If I was to INVEST in some biggies a discreet safe would suffice.

However, coins are my Hobby and will remain just that.
