I meant coins generally not this one type, obviously ones like this i would buy or offer to buy as a BIN but not bid on eBay for them when worth a lot more than 99p.

I don't profess to follow or understand your rational, but hey, each to his own. I've always found that a low start attracts more interest and anything will eventually achieve it's current worth. If I get less than I paid, so be it and if someone gets a bargain, lucky them. I had it as BIN for £200 but no one did.

I just put my maximum bid into an auction sniper (I use Gixen) and then just ignore it until the end so I don't get drawn into a bidding war. 

I've won some bargains, but lost some I'd probably have bid up but possibly overpaid for.

When I was buying I used to bid the maximum amount I was willing to pay. Same result, some won (often at a lower price than my max) and some not. I recall auto sniping was quite new back then.

The problem with that is that someone else may keep bidding it up. With a sniper your bid is not submitted until the final 6 seconds or even 1-3 seconds with a subscription, which doesn't give then a chance to respond.

Perhaps I'm being dense but I don't see much difference. I either win it or not and if not it's because it went for more than I wanted to pay - which was my prior placed max bid. Your snipe bid is also your maximum, which may also win, or not if it's not as much as the bid I place a week before. Either way both are maximum bids, just placed at different times.  Before auto sniping existed I often sat watching the countdown with my finger hovering over the mouse to click and enter a last second bid. Others may still bid it up as the auction progresses or those sniping may still beat yours.

If your max bit is submitted one second before the end then anyone manually bidding against you won’t have a chance to react. And with sniping no one knows you’re bidding until T-1.

I'm not Peter 😊 and the listing says: London Coin Auctions sold one in 2016 for £280 hammer price. All I was getting at is I would of made it clear the coin in the auction is the coin which sold in 2016.

I would add a footnote! All the action will be in the last 24 hours and ebay will promote the listing and for sure some people that see the listing will have not read this discussion.

I understand if it’s a cheap coin but something of any value it’s easy for the seller to see how much you have bid. As an example if you place a bid for £350 when the coins listed then if the sellers happy with that amount they just put a bid on for £340 on the day it finishes.

Sorry to disagree, but no, as an eBay seller, you cannot see a buyer's maximum bid amount. eBay's Automatic Bidding keeps the maximum limit hidden from everyone except the buyer and the system itself. Also a seller can't bid on their own auction......but easy enough to ask a friend or relative.

You disagree because you don’t know how it’s done and not going to put it on a public forum. As a seller you can see the maximum bid just as they can put a bid on from another account.

I followed the bidding right up to the end on my phone. There was little activity in the last hour and none at all in the closing seconds, so no one had put a snipe bid in, at least not a higher one. 

One other piece of eBay advice I have for sellers is to time it so that the auction ends at a sensible time, say afternoon or early evening at the weekend or early evening midweek. Bidders not using a sniping service are likely to be in bed or watching something on TV at 22:37 and less likely to be following the bidding. Especially when there's a World Cup final on...

Maybe it's small margins, but it could mean two bidding against each other vs a lone bidder.
