absence of uniformity

On Terrys example shown in Michaels book if you look closely there is a slanted line under the 9 in the date which is visible on my coin also shown on Peter's coin he posted on facebook a while back. The slight doubling? to the zero is shown on both coins, the shape and postion of all the teeth match, the height of the last 1 and its location over the gap are the features I noticed when comparing my coin to Terry's.

Hi @terrysoldpennies can I ask you thoughts on this coin please. The Aa coin pictured left in my attached file is the coin you have. The right hand picture appears to match Aa, it appears shows the slight doubling? on the top of the 0. To me the right hand image appears to be Aa. Could you please let me know what you think? I would go with the RMM opinion, however you can do another test if you want to check yourself that doesn't involve working out the specific gravity. Simply place a strong rare earth magnet on the coin and tip the coin up to let the magnet slide off. If the the magnet free falls at normal speed its not Silver. (You need a strong small rare earth magnet for it to work) If the magnet slides down across the coin much slower at a constant speed its Silver. Worth thinking about metal sliding across the coin and potential damage /scratch you could place a piece of paper on the coin so the magnet doesn't cause any damage. Its called magnetic braking. The test would not work on a copper/silver plated coin because copper's high conductivity will cause the magnet to slow down although the magnet will still slide faster than silver.

So, between your coin and the others like Richard's, Paddy's, and the 49 others I looked at I didn't notice a difference in the lighthouse. Instead, the main difference was the fingers on the trident. The list of similarities I shared in my last post are identifying features between your coin and the single coin I found (1 of 50). These two appear to be the same, showing the same finger configuration and arrangement. The list of die markers possibly confirms that these two coins are from the same die. However, I don't know why the fingers look different on these two coins compared to all the rest. Could it be explained by something as simple as die wear or deterioration causing the deformed fingers seen on the majority? I don't know enough to say for sure. Hopefully, a member with more knowledge can offer some insights into the cause of this feature. Either way, I'm pleased you are happy with it!

This image shows the single coin I found out of 50 coins studied next to Citizen H coin. To further show they are the same I have circled the die characteristics seen on both coins; - Break in the linear circle just above the 1st N of Penny. - The aparent line in the exergue to the left of the 1. - The Kink in the linear circle to the left of the lighthouse and undersized teeth. - And the small die cracks shown on the teeth by Britannia's foot, between the two coins these defects are not exactly the same on both. And ofcourse the fingers on the trident.

Its hard to be sure from the images but is there a larger gap between the right hand prong of the trident and the linear circle on the 1/50 coin and Citizen H coin?

I found 1 that's similar. Thats 1/50 coins checked, the rest match those of Richard and Paddy.

@Citizen H when I was looking at your coin I noticed this: (The right image is your coin) There appears to be a difference in the arrangement of the fingers.

Just butthurt you got called out and exposed for talking rubbish about looking at 1000 coins 🤣 It's fascinating to see you preach about the obligation to welcome new collectors in one breath, and then hurl insult because someone simply offered findings of 40 coins looked at 4 examples found.

Im going to stop there at 4/40.

As sample size grows the numbers are coming down 4 of 36 now.

My analysis was purely based on numbers presented to me by the tiny short sample. I didnt purchase anything. I do actively look for documented/published types, and keep my eye out for anything out the ordinary although I dont collect halfpennies I have gathered a fair few of the overdates and found a few rarer pairings, I find the series alot more complicated than pennies and I dont get the same thrill. I think because the HP's lack the popularity of the Penny Im not so driven to invest the time to search.

A quick small random sample of 12 coins, and instantly find 3 examples, I think itis fair to assume the surviving population is actually quite high. A 25% frequency out of such a small sample suggests this wasnt a rare occurrence from a single pair of die imo which is not worth much 😉

Im making you aware I have seen the same feature on a 1861 Halfpenny.

I noticed on this halfpenny the features detailed in the attached image. I know its not B/R but I was still interested to identify the possible cause/reason.
