Descartes Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Hello chaps, I'm a bit embarrassed to ask such a question so far into my hammered penny collecting, but is there a definitive list of 'moneyers by mint town' published anywhere? I'd like to get a list for the mint in Salisbury. I sometimes read listings like 'there are only two known coins of this moneyer' for this type, very scarce, etc and have been wondering how they know this! Thanks, Descartes Quote
Rob Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Try North (vol.1) for a reasonably comprehensive list of moneyers for each reign at a particular mint. As for individual numbers of type by a certain moneyer you will have to refer to specialist volumes or articles regarding said mint. 2 Quote

I really must get a copy of both the North volumes then. They are quite pricey, but I guess they are worth the investment in the long run! Quote
Ukstu Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Try here if you don't mind a pre owned copy. https://www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/title/english-hammered-coinage/author/north-j-j/used/ 1 Quote
Coinery Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 (edited) There’s this copy at £7 the other one is also on that site at £8.50 Equally I don’t think the latest new editions are that expensive new either. http://www.galata.co.uk/store.asp?storeAction=showDetail&stockID=6605 edit: I never understand why the Galata links don’t work, but you can search them with ‘north hammered’ on their site Edited April 22, 2018 by Coinery 1 Quote

I paid £40 for the pair about 10 years ago. Snap em up! 1 Quote
Coys55 Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 I don't know if it covers your period of interest, but have you seen Martin Allen's 2012 British Numismatic Society paper "The Mints and Moneyers of England and Wales 1066-1158"? Download the PDF from: https://www.britnumsoc.org/publications/Digital%20BNJ/pdfs/2012_BNJ_82_5.pdf 1 Quote

ArthurD Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 If you take a look at the SCBI and EMC you can filter by mint as well as monarch and view a comprehensive list of coins for that mint. It's excellent up to and including the Norman period, a bit sketchy for Plantagenet issues. Martin Allen is very approachable and always keen to hear about new discoveries and will also assist with questions. 1 Quote
