damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Hi I was looking at a coin on ebay and am curious what grade and value you would put on this coin. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Queen-Victoria-1884-Half-Crown-Very-Nice-Coin-/371667233163?hash=item568917e98b:g:NYoAAOSw-4BXcTEe Im not necessarily buying it, its nearly finished anyway im just curious/trying to learn so I guess you could expect a bunch more of these from me aswell. PWA 1967 Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Is that a rare one ?. The grade is POOR ...I.E. Rang Tang. Sorry if its rare but sure someone else can help you Edited July 4, 2016 by PWA 1967 Quote
damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 Ive no idea all it said was Queen Victoria 1884 Half Crown im literally just browsing through ebay and trying to get an idea of whats what as you can probably tell not much of a clue currently Quote
damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 I felt it looked OK in comparison to some of the stuff ive seen Quote
PWA 1967 Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 I wasnt being clever ... but the grade i doubt comes much worse. I dont have a clue if its scarce. If your learning and i am far from much better ,i suggest you buy the books and buy off reputable dealers. Otherwise will cost you money and could end up with things you dont want. Such as a box i have Take your time . Pete. Quote
damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 No problem, I didnt take it as being clever, like I said not much of a clue currently so I appreciate the help/feedback Quote
PWA 1967 Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) If your not sure what your buying ,dont bother. You will end up with coins you dont want Then you end up giving them away...Have a go on the correct score thread Bit of interest. Edited July 4, 2016 by PWA 1967 Quote
damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 I saw that the other day but I dont have 30 posts yet to post in that thread. Quote
PWA 1967 Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Get on. If it wont accept your thread put it on this one. I posted in the wrong section ....but that was my fault. What score and what time first goal Quote
damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 OK ill go 2-0 Germany 28th min first goal, thanks Quote
IanB Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 IMO the coin is some where between fair and fine. If you think about how a coin would wear the high points will go first, hence the ear is nearly gone as well as the detail in the hair. There is still a little detail around the nose and eye but this is probably being protected by the lettering and the rim of the coin which will be slightly raised. The same goes for the reverse the high points will wear first, which you can guess at from the picture. As to its worth the book is saying £20 for fine, but IMO the coin is below that grade. Quote
Paulus Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 I agree with Ian's grade assessment, Fair-Fine, reverse slightly better. I would value the coin at precisely £19. Quote
VickySilver Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Fine, with unacceptable harsh cleaning that nets it a fair. Quote
Stuntman Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 I'd say the Obverse is Fair, the Reverse Fine or near so. None of the Vicky Young Head halfcrowns is very common but 1884 isn't particularly rare, there were nearly 1.6 million minted. The commonest mintages are 1883 at just under 3 million and 1881 at about 2.3 million. If you like the design, it might be worth looking to spend say £50-£75 on a nicer one, or perhaps spend the same £20 budget on say an 1887 Jubilee Head halfcrown? As an example, I bought this 1885 halfcrown from an online dealer about a year ago for £66 delivered. The seller graded it GVF, the coin is nice in hand. Quote
IanB Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 That is a lovely coin and with a nice bit of tone developing. Quote

damowain Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 Thanks everyone for the feedback and input, I think the main reason I was looking at the cheaper ones was just because I really wasnt sure what I was looking at and didnt want to make a decent sized mistake without really asking but going forward any interest ill post on here. Thanks again. Quote
Peter Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 The 1884 2/6d....well it's round,nice rims but ....it's just a crap example. Quote
