Davethepitch Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I wanted a Millennium year 2000 coin set but the Royal Mint changed the shape of the case from the oblong style to a con caved edge style and it did not fit in with my other sets in a book formation. So i thought i know i will buy a BU set and a BU crown and then purchase a 1999 empty case and put the coins in which i have done. Now i have done it i think i have ruined the BU set and should have left the coins in the cardboard packet. Dave Quote
Nutsaboutcoins Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 How you display your coins is up to you. I keep some of mine in their packaging and "liberate" others. No point in crying over spilled milk coins. Quote
Davethepitch Posted June 1, 2016 Author Posted June 1, 2016 I know what you mean but i know i have devalued it to almost nothing but on the plus side the coins are now in an oblong case and match the rest as i collect sets of every five years 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. I also collect queen Victoria coins, 50p coins, £1 coins and £2 coins and yes i know that sounds strange. Quote
mrbadexample Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 You could buy another one then sell the first set as individual coins. You probably wouldn't lose very much. Quote

There is/was a guy on ebay who has made a business out of trashing sets and selling individual coins. Can't remember his moniker, but from memory he was selling quite well, and was certainly up on the deal compared to the price of indiviudal sets. Quote

Lots of people splitting up sets because they want a nice BUNC 50p / £1 etc then selling the rest on. Not something that appeals to me though. Quote
Davethepitch Posted June 1, 2016 Author Posted June 1, 2016 (edited) I just wanted a Millennium set the same size as the rest. Dave Edited June 1, 2016 by Davethepitch Quote
Nutsaboutcoins Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 It's the coins that are important not the packaging, a concept the RM seem to have missed. You have a "consistent" collection, just enjoy it, you haven't necessarily reduced the value, but even if you have, it only really has a value when you sell, so if you keep them no harm done. Quote

Eminently sensible in fact, since £2 coins especially, enable would be collectors of currently circulating coins, to obtain some low mintage issues via change in the pocket. Nordle11 Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Agreed! Collecting 50ps is what lead me to where I am today and I'm still collecting them as they come out! 2 Quote

I don't know if it's the one you mean but there's "just uncirculated UK" who does exactly as you say. Even selling the card inserts! Edited June 3, 2016 by richtips86 Quote
Davethepitch Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 I would like a set of these coins if anyone is selling any. Quote
Davethepitch Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 I have just purchased the set of three and knowing my luck they will be minted in the millions. Quote
