  1. No, I think you could have.
  2. You couldn't know the seller was "all at sea" until you contacted them. If they had decided the pull the listing and send to e.g. LCA for auction, Jerry would have lost out on a nice bargain. If the same happened to something you had your eye on, would you be happy?
  3. Well, I guess that no-one "helpfully" informed the seller of what they had.
  4. Not if they think they can get away without doing so they won't.
  5. Just out of interest, why?
  6. There really isn't any need, or much point, unless you offer it at a reasonable price. You are probably well aware that you're not comparing like with like. The 1862 is one of <600 000. Your 1872 is one of >7 000 000.
  7. I'll probably have my nose in a book too.
  8. Indeed.I think we can safely say that the entire article is a complete crock.
  9. It's not that so much as the apparent belief that asking price = selling price.
  10. I don't know the answer to your question Rob, but if it's any consolation I took a shufti at your site and don't see it.
  11. Thanks bagerap. It all becomes clear.
  12. A rose by any other name... It's cleaning. They call it "conservation" because cleaning sounds bad. I'm with your grandfather. But if there is a problem which is only going to get worse (e.g. verdigris, bronze disease, zinc pest) then I think intervention is necessary. After all, if you do nothing it will eventually destroy the coin. So what choice is there?
  13. You're probably right Jerry, although it's the first one I've ever seen that had a convincing portrait.
  14. Well it's definitely 1701. I can't help thinking that both the obverse and reverse look ok. Which would mean they're images from different coins. I suspect you'd be sent a gaming token that doesn't closely resemble either.
  15. I don't know, I choose not to can't afford to collect 'em. But the monarch doesn't match the year...
  16. What's this please? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ONE-OLD-BRITISH-COIN-DATED-1701-UNCATALOGUED-ENGLAND/263539255958?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 I keep looking at it and thinking the portrait actually looks quite good.
  17. Not to mention the erroneous apostrophe - that was the only reason I bought mine. Never did find out why the hedgehogs though...
  18. The cynic in me would say it's nothing whatsoever to do with keeping historical items in their own country, but seeing the opportunity to generate some cash. If they really wanted to keep it, you wouldn't be able to buy it (legitimately).
  19. Not the same legend on the reverse though.
  20. Thanks. I didn't know about the farthing. I checked my collection but it didn't affect the numbers.
  21. Seems to me you could have kept it and saved yourself a lot of trouble.
  22. Any idea why this exists John? It doesn't look like a proper Roman I punch to me - more as though it was entered upside down and then repunched normally. Is that a possibility?
