I think the problems of over or less valued were only English .. In fact in Italy but for what I know also abroad the use of gold italian coins remained the same after 1344... the reason I think was the price of silver in England that was of course different by ohers nations ( see the venetian soldini ( soldino at singular ) for ex ) as it happened for the penny gold of Henry III ...

Hi From Richard Kelleher's book : Edward IIIs fisrt attempt at a gold coinage took the form of the double leopard and its fractions. It weighted the equivalent of 2 italian florins (7,00g ) ( consider that the florin but also the genovino or later the zecchino had a weight of 3,50g ! ) . [...] The coin was withdrawn and redesigned shortly after issue in 1344 as it was overvalued against silver . Only 3 of these coins are currently known. the value of this coin was 72 d. = 6s and of course the leopard 36d. ( it's the leopard that had the same weight of florin or other italians gold coins ) and the Helm (1,75g. ) 18d = 1s. 6d. These coins according with Lord Stewartby were struck between Jan to July 1344

This is my recent acquisition ... A long cross penny ... I've identified it as: Henry III , penny , york mint , monneyer ION ( Iohannes de Seleby ) ( I don't find many coins of this monneyer ) ... About the class I think it could be a IIIb but I'm not sure ..... what do you think? Matteo

Absolutly !! In fact I have bought the SCBI 39 especially because I've got two pennies published on this book ... I think there is only one edition of the SCBI 39

Thanks for the link ... I have to admit that I knew already it. About the images in the SCBI are not of good quality but there are so many exemplares that usually you can find all you need .. for example for class 10cf3 I discovered that many pennies have chin broken ... Usually I use first the galata guide ( there are geat images ) and then the SCBI

in cf3 the left ornament is usually hooked ...

the crown ... I used the SCBI 39 ( the North collection ) and I find that this coin is quit similar to n605 and others

Hi all sometimes on the auction catalogues , for the short and long cross pennies ,there is written : a rare monneyer for this mint ...but where did they find this information ? I mean of course they can see the singles presence in hoards and collections ... but is there a book or a website where you can find the rarity of every monneyer for all mints ? Matteo

what type of book do you search ? if you want a catalog with all varieties and rarities I think North's books are the best... While if you look for a book about coinage history I can raccomend this book http://www.greenlightpublishing.com/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=18099860 .. I think it is a valid point of start . An other exellent book is " English coins " by Lord Stewartby , published by Spink ... very detailed and usefull ( it is one of my preferit about engish coins ) .. but I think it is a little more difficult to understand for a beginner and there isn't the Normann coinage .... of course there are more specific and detailed books for determined periods or mints ...like Robin J. Eaglen's books for the mint of Bury St. Edmund or the North collection for the edwardian pennies ....

good but also hard question is your ! I think you have to consider if the seller is a professional dealer or not , because if he/she is.. it is his job and he should know perfectly the correct classification of the coin and you can don't tell him anything ...while if the seller is a private it isn't his job and probably he is ignorant in numismatic field so I think it should be right inform him. I hope you can understand my opinion
