Possibly. I just can't seem to make out an "H". But as stated above the configuration of the die would make it more likely to be a 1874H!

A couple of better close up pictures of my 2 x 1858 with 8 over 6 and 8 over what we think could be another 8. Playing with my new toy USB Microscope Unfortunately the drivers dont work properly on my 64 bit PC so am having to do Screen Shots!

just managed to get a close up of the bottom of the 1874 halfpenny. It maybe whats left of an "H" but not sure. Would have thought if the H was worn away so would have part of the rim or base of at least one of the Numerals. There is something there granted. Regards Brian

I didn't state that both have the same reverse. Also a massive thanks to Pete, PWA 1967, who supplied me with both the above

I just found this thread after doing a bit of inspecting of my 1953 pennies. I noted that on the standard, set 1953 pennies "I" of both REGINA and ELIZABETH both point to the Left of a tooth. Whereas on the Proof pennies "I" from both points to the Right of the tooth. I have posted the 2 I have. Are there any other variants, other than the mega rare?

So possibly an 8 over 8, nice thanks Bob and Rob, totally appreciate it. Going back to the die crack on both coins. I still find it peculiar that the flaw is in the same place running along the bottom of the letters, starting and stopping at the same place! Possibly shows an inherent weakness in that area of the design.

this is it going through a magnifying glass and a macro lens my phone. Looks totally different. No idea what happened before!!!!

Hi Rob, agree after looking at the die cracks full size on screen. Very strange that both flaws are found in exactly the same place though!! Bar the thicker flaw coming from the rim the underlying follows almost exactly the some route.

We were talking elsewhere on the forum about die flaws and progression. So as I was going through a few of my copper half pennies that i have been picking up lately I noticed these 2 which both seem to have the same die crack. My question is which came first. Did the major die crack appear first and get mended leaving only the slightest one behind or is it more likely that the minor one was the start and the major crack came later. It also nice to notice that the 2 last "8" in the date are done over other things. One is clearly a 6 the other I am not so sure about as there seems to be a tail coming out from the lower circle of the 8.

Will have another good look at the coin close up.

Hi Mr T, just looking at reverse J, it seems to always indicate "H" fir Heaton mint. Mine has no "H" and no sign of I ever being there. Am trying to get my head around it at the moment. Help Thanks Brian

Thanks everyone. Just managed to get a hold of the full back issue of Coin News for 2004, thanks to Tyneside NS book library(Cheers Ian Nutsaboutcoins),so just starting to look through those now. Hopefully that should help a lot when identifying the halfpennies from now on. Thanks guys.
