Which toned down to that beautiful milk chocolate colour we see today. I agree Peter, the George I coppers are probably my favourites too, and which I consider to just pip the Charles II issue for overall design. The point I was making earlier was how the coppers introduced in 1672 were so radically different in appearance to those which came before and so can be seen as the first issue of a modern looking coinage (and yes, I know silver was issued in the 1660s but Damian's topic relates specifically to copper ).

The introduction of recognisably modern era base metal coins in 1672 would have to be included on any list. To this day the Charles II farthing, simple, uncluttered, remains an example of good design.

Absolutely Peter, her and all the others. I remember how, 10-15 years ago, I would spend and enjoyable hour or two hunting for coins on ebay several times each week.. It was fun, and there were always one or two proper rarities to be found which a seller may not have been aware of when listing. Now, there's so much repro being sold as genuine, washers being described as 'high grade', worthless 1971 pennies on at hundreds or thousands, that I can't even be bothered to look anymore.

You're probably right. If she's listing each time they're offering a £1 maximum fee then I suppose she'll continue to fish hoping, eventually, some poor sap will bite.

As Rob says, you need to die match. We have only the date area of your coin to compare with one of the recognised variety but, even so, they don't appear to match.

Differences in the angle of throat and jaw are pretty obvious in those photos too.

Interesting: The gothic crown with the weird fake red toning now has a couple of bids on it, bids which just happen to be from n***y and m***f. These two played a part in knocking up the price on the previous one. Just a coincidence?

Viewing this one I couldn't help but notice a couple of others which appeared on the same page. The seller goes by the name of 'highrating-lowprice'. There's loads of it, scrap grade silver coins at ridiculous asking prices and bullion sovs at more than four times their value. They have a 20450 feedback rating of 100%. 1847 WW .SOLID SILVER PLAIN EDGE VICTORIA GOTHIC CROWN MY GRADE E.F The artificially toned coin is the one being auctioned by marlybob1 on Ebay. The bright coin is the repro, honestly described as such, which mycopau sold to her for £1 last December.

It's the same repro coin, which she bought from Ebayer mycopau for £1 last December. She failed to get the money for it that time and since then, I'm told, has had another stab at artificially toning it. Ebay are onto her (thanks to Pete and others) and I doubt she'll get the money this time either. The other, with the reddish artificial toning, was originally on as a BIN but was taken down and has since reappeared as an auction listing. If you look at her feedback as a buyer you'll notice a seller of repro coins appears second on the list immediately below mycopau's comment.

Odd isn't it how someone selling tat plucked from change for a few pounds a pop has suddenly upgraded stock to the tune of a brace well preserved gothic crowns. A few nice 18th century coppers? Some decent bull head silver? Three or four high grade George V half crowns? Nah, straight in there with the gothics. I wonder if this second specimen has also received the ageing treatment mentioned in mycopau's ebay message about the one she bought from him. Didn't any of those bidding on the his repro bother to take a look at her other listings? If they do so since leaving their bids seeing a second has been added will surely set alarm bells ringing even for the most naive of buyers.
