Needing help from the hammered gurus!
Colin G. replied to Colin G.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks for all your responses gurus!! I knew I could count on you guys to come up with the goods!! This is the beauty of this forum, experts in all fields available 24hrs a day. Chris once my hammered collection expands beyond its current size (2 pieces ) I might just order your book. I have to admit I was not aware of that particuar title. My other hammered is a Tealby "cut" halfpenny, I think thats the correct terminology I will have to try and upload images to see if anyone can pick out any other info from the coin. Oh well my knowledge of hammered coins has advanced massively today, genuine thanks for the assistance, it is appreciated. -

Ta very much, is the mint specified in the legend, or do they have specific mint marks? Minted in Canterbury, found in Lichfield!! Got it I think, is it the reverse legend, which I think reads CIVI/TAS/CAN/TOR? -

I am after some help to identify my latest detecting find, this is my first full hammered coin , and I believe it is an Edward I penny, but I am not sure . Any additional info anyone can provide on this piece would be appreciated. As many of you will know, I am a collector of milled coins, so when one of these beauties pops up it generally has me stumped!!! Reverse Obverse

put these 3 coins in date order....
Colin G. replied to basecamp's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Pinman, The one on the right is a lead token, I often find these when detecting. I am lead to believe that they date about 17c and were used by the farmer to pay farmhands, who then exchanged the tokens for farm goods. Wages must be bad if you can't earn enough to get a coin of the realm, and have to be paid in home made lead tokens. Some of the better examples have initials or even dates on them. If I get chance I iwll put some images up. They normally adopt a crossed or cartwheel pattern with raised dots in the segments. Due to them being simply made they are also normally uniface. Oops should have been "led" to believe not "lead" no pun intended!!! -
Congratulation, give yourself a big pat on the back, and make sure you celebrate your achievements!!!!

1826 farthing querry
Colin G. replied to josie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Josie, This series is littered with repunched numerals/letters, and many of the dies appear to have been used even when showing considerable signs of wear/damage. I think this explains the faults you are seeing. -
Coins that go missing in the post, using registered post.
Colin G. replied to PINMAN's topic in Free for all
I would agree with the comments about recorded post and standard post. I find that more items seem to go astray when sent recorded than sent first class. I also find that I get very few parcels go astray when sent overseas, when compared to UK post which is a bit bizarre!! My policy when buying is if the item is low value pay first class and take a chance, if it something higher in value try and get special delivery. I remember one coin I sent to Italy using overseas insured which was high value. It went astray and I offered a full refund and started a claim against the post office, the item was returned to me 2 months later. It had turned up at JFK airport in the states!!! I eventually managed to forward the item to the buyer who was still wanted the item and re-sent payment. I included the original packing as evidence of the global tour the coin had taken. I currently have a farthing which seems to have disappeared en-route to me from the USA, hopefully it will turn up soon, these things can take time -
CHRISTO or CHRESTO ?
Colin G. replied to coin watch's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There is no reason why an "interested collector" cannot study. That is how most of them become experts. Whilst I would not be able to comment on the practicalities of such a study because I don't know the first thing about hammered coins, I would say if you are interested in studying coin varieties there is nothing stopping you commencing such a project. Six years ago I started collecting farthings, and became fascinated with the varieties that were created by the manufacturing & die maintenance process. I still do not claim to be an expert in this field, but have gained a huge amount of knowledge in this area over this period, and have also had the pleasure of discussing the topic with numerous collectors who I otherwise may not have made contact with. I have to admit I was hesitant in creating my website on this subject, because of my limited knowledge, and the thought of how others would percieve the information I presented, but I would be the first to admit it has been great fun creating and maintaining the site, and I would recommend it to anyone. -
Welcome aboard Jason , what area of collecting coins are you interested in?
-
Jen, Welcome to the mad house!!! I am sure if there any coins that you cannot identify, if you can post an image someone on the forum will be able to guide you. Chris may correct me but I think there is still an issue with posting images on the forum, so if you do want any pics posting, e-mail them to me and I will host them for you.

Coin watch, there is an issue at the moment with uploading images to the forum, if you e-mail the photos, I will host them for you and provide a link. -
And it's only the common variety of the two 1937 proofs I am going to have to start spray painting some farthings!!!

New RM issue
Colin G. replied to Emperor Oli's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Seriously the Royal mint are starting to churn out more and more modern comemerative "collectable" junk by the bucket load lately. In Junes issue of Coin News they even advertised a "striking carousel money box in hand-crafted silver pewter and gold, to a Diamond wedding celebration bell in silver plate and rose gold". They are starting to loose the art factor and replacing it with the tat factor. There must be lots of people out there with lots of cash to burn!!! Shame I am not one of them -

A NEWP for me this time
Colin G. replied to Gary D's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Gary, Peck does state that "As first struck for trial purposes only they were relatively thin coins, but at the last moment reports came in that they were sometimes able to actuate certain shilling and sixpence slot machines. To obviate this their thickness was increased sufficiently..." This could be a possibility, but the coin does appear somewhat mistruck, and I have to admit, before I got to the lower posts I thought canadian 5c Peck does reference a thin flan example but states it as "pure nickel; thin flan" Rarity [Probably Unique] -
Re: "To Hanover" (Cumberland Jacks)
Colin G. replied to Colin G.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks Bob images received, I really appreciate you taking the time to submit them. I have one last favour for the forum viewers, does anyone have images of a lauer farthing they would be willing to contribute? -
All, Following a few recent questions, I have received, I decided to add a few pages giving some limited information on counters/tokens that are commonly associated with farthings. One of these being the "To Hanover" counters, the bizarre thing is that I do not have one to hand (I am sure I had one somewhere ). Does anyone have a photo of one of these counters that they would be willing to contribute. If you do, can you e-mail it to me.
