Religion and politicsColin G. replied to choolie's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area! Whilst we are all bearing our souls, I am also an atheist, and as Huss says I also offer no ill feelings to those who hold religious beliefs. For me the problem comes when an individuals religious beliefs affect the lives of others. In relation to the riots, whilst the initial trigger may have been the shooting, if you think the vast majority of those involved in the riots that followed, were even remotely interested in that incident you would be sadly mistaken. Opportunistic theives running amongst the community was the case for the vast majority. The shooting certainly gave them an excuse when caught, similar to the excuse that they were taking from the capitalistic companies who had made their lives misery. Peck I am involved in building control as my day career, and have seen countless changes to buildings and their management to accommodate disabled persons and make buildings and their facilities more accessible. Whilst I appreciate that this is an emotive subject, and there will inevitably be those who may not be able to work due to their individual disabilities and requirements, there are now certainly opportunities out there in accessible buildings which may have not been present even 5 years ago, and therefore claimants should be tested on a regular basis to determine whether they can join the working population. There will always be those genuine people who lose out in any benefits system, and those who get away with entitlements to which they should not be eligible. I just would not advocate an individuals rights to life long benefits without routine re-assessment in what is an ever changing society. As for the shootings, I completely agree with John on this, a very tough split decision has to be made, and I have no doubt if someone I knew was on the receiving end of a wrongful shooting I would be outraged and upset. With the Jean Charles de-Menezes incident if officers had not decided to act and the threat would have been real they would have been subject to public outrage for not acting in the same situation. Damned if they do, damend if they don't!! There is no simple solution to violent crime and by arming police officers mistakes will be made, the same as they will in all other aspects of life, but they should be kept to a minimum and investigated to ensure "lessons are learnt"....my most hated phrase at the moment, spouted by every politician when they cock something else up

Advice on coin prices for a newbie?Colin G. replied to Mongo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Welcome to the forum, with your price range you could easily get a good run of farthings going back in decent grade....obviously I am slightly biased You certainly have not made any bad purchases with the prices you have paid, and seeking advice at an early stage is a very wise move. Get yourself to a local coin fair as well if you get the chance, it gives you a great opportunity to see various denominations/styles in the flesh. One of the most important things to do is collect coins that interest you. Your tastes will change with time, and your collection will keep redefining itself, but it is important that you enjoy what you collect...in my opinion

	9705 00 00 90 is the code for copper/bronze but I got the seller to add (footnote 03001 - 5% rate applicable)
-
	Where is the drool smiley!!
-
Just received a nice invoice from parcelforce for another coin from overseas, I took the liberty of getting the seller to write the customs code on for the 5% rate, just to see what would happen, I knew the seller was going to fill the customs form out accurately so I thought I would try and encourage the 5% rate rather than the 20%. They have charged at the 5% rate, so it is a worthwhile exercise if you want to to bite the bullet rather than run the risk of 20% being applied, it is the bloody admin charge from parcelforce that makes your blood boil!!

It looks like there has been a knock on the corner of the 1, which could be giving the impression of an inverted 1. I know the base of the 1 is certainly missing a serif, but I would want a clearer image, and an example without damage to the digit (where it can be confirmed with certainty that the description is true and accurate). Can you get any clearer images/show me the other example?

1830 GEORGE IV BRITISH FARTHINGColin G. replied to Benmnynevis's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries I'd say less than F - Britannia's body is worn almost flat. But I'd echo the welcome. I think you are being a bit harsh there, the wear is to the drapery across the legs, part of the armour is still just barely visible, and the helmet detail is still pretty good (although this tends to be one of the last places to go). Shield design is worn but not excessively, this area I would argue wears quicker on the farthing than other denominations, bear in mind this is not one of those large frisbees you lot collect I managed to find the coin on ebay (hence the cheeky, tongue in cheek comment above), and the Obverse still shows a fair amount of deep hair detail as would be expected on a fine example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1830-GEORGE-IV-BRITISH-FARTHING-FARTHING-NICE-GRADE-/221014376344?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item33757bbf98

1830 GEORGE IV BRITISH FARTHINGColin G. replied to Benmnynevis's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Hi and welcome to the forum, that certainly looks to be a good fine, although with a considerable edge bump at 12 o'clock. Should make about £5.50 plus post on ebay ?

Love to see them police that, 3 million UK websites, that will keep em busy

My advice would be to choose something that is easy to update/replace, it is amazing how these things snowball once they get going, and you start getting image updates. I have learnt it is important to make it as time efficient as possible....if you want a social life!!

George III Guinea from 1970Colin G. replied to Martin Dickson's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Also bear in mind that there were a vast number of imitation spade guineas made for advertising purposes as gaming counters etc. that hold very little value, so a photo would definitely be required to give accurate guidance. http://www.aboutfarthings.co.uk/Gaming%20Tokens.html

I only want to find one so I can have a closer look

Terry, Would you be willing to provide full scanned images of the reverse and obverse for me to have a look at colin(at)aboutfarthings.co.uk? A similar thing occurs on some 1928 farthings where there is the appearance that the date has been recut/strengthened, however this is more likely to actually be some form of mechanical doubling caused by movement in the dies when the coin is struck, or movement when the die was struck from a master die. The fact that the all of the features shown have doubling in a downward direction would also seem to make this the explanation on this coin. Still an interesting piece in my eyes Going to have to have a trawl through a pile of 1929 farthings now
