I would guess that this may be a result of the coins being steel cored with plating, and therefore an impurity may be commencing reaction/corrosion beneath the plating...not sure but it would seem a plausible explanation. I think 2008 2p's and 2010 onwards 5p's were plated steel

Dave when you get the domain name you can the set up your own e-mails on that domain. For example I can issue any e-mail addresses with aboutfarthings.co.uk at the end. You will get the mail servers as part of the hosting package.

Thats who I use but all these companies you need to have your wits about you, if you forget to renew they get the domain and then you can buy it back off them for a nominal fee of about £80

I agree with a vast majority of what you are saying Tom, treasure items take 18 months to 2 years to go through the process, and a vast majority of what is recorded has been recorded voluntarily and not because it needs to be by legislation. The trouble is if detectorists don't record then they are accused of stashing hoards of treasures away, and self interest and if they do record it becomes an admin nightmare. UKDFD does try to hit that middle ground and does not accept everything, whereas PAS records everything!! Damned if we do and damned if we don't!! Detecting gets a lot of bad press and a lot of it is undeserved.

Dave, It is a good deal in terms of trying web hosting, and seeing whether a website is for you. I genuinely can not fault the service I have for the price paid and whilst I try to sort most things out myself, the couple of problems I have needed help with, they have sorted out very quickly. The two areas I would complian about is teh auto renew, which like you say most companies do nowadays, but I just find it a bit sneaky, and the help section has lots of FAQ's and you have to be pretty determined to find a way through the FAQ's to get to "log a ticket" and speak to a person, but when you do it they respond within minutes. They offer web templates and you also get a free shopping cart, such as Zencart, OS Commerce etc, which can be a bugger to set up, but a great challenge if you are into that sort of stuff. Time consuming but very rewarding!! The usual price after the offer has expired is about £60-70 a year depending on the exchange rates for their basic package, but it does what I need it to!!

Paul Barford is a troll nothing more nothing less, he is detested by both the vast majority of archaeologists and detectorists alike. He manipulates and twists every quote on every subject to his advantage, and is very good at what he does, including removing comments from his blog that he does not agree with. It is not a forum for debate when one side can manipulate and remove comments made by the other, that is why it reads so convincingly. As for a true representation of current thinking on detecting and archaeology....... Just look at the PAS database and see what percentage of finds in the last few years have been made and recorded by detectorists including the great Staffordshire hoard which would still not have seen the light of day. Yes there are those few within the hobby who carry out illegal activities but that is true of most if not all hobbies, and why should the innocent majority who are genuinely interested in amateur archaeology be punished. The PAS database funded by the government is a nightmare, just try searching for records. Detectorists have taken to funding their own to run parallel - UKDFD, try searching that one in comparison!! Be careful with Mr Barford Tom, he would have your collection in a museum drawer only to be looked at by the educated few quicker than a flash if he had his way Sorry if this post seems a bit blunt but I have seen the damage Mr Barford can do!!

Debbie, I have seen a few with the Lord's Prayer on. Fantastic to think of the writing size, the coin is from British India, and is probably a quarter rupee at that size. I think some of the British India coins had some stunning designs, and can be picked up relatively cheaply. Very nice

Most coins that have been buried will show this patina. Whilst it can be uniform and even appealing on some coins, it generally will evolve into verdigris in areas, especially at the edges for some reason.
