Having said that a 1911 crown would have been a magnicent coin.
-
No you are right sorry I was mixing up the 1902 crown. My mistake.
-
I have a 1911 proof set that I brought many years ago for $400. and I noticed it had two extra spaces for a half and full sovereign, sadly missing.I have also seen long sets that include half, full, two pound and five pound coins but no crown. Does any one know if there were sets issued with a matt proof crown or were they issued separately? Given the matte proof issue was easily damaged were they issued in a presentation case? As far as the missing gold coins in my set are concerned most that I have seen for sale are very expensive which may explain their removal in the first place.

Nothing wrong with them? They are fakes intended to deceive, underweight and fineness. That will do for start.

So, Brexit....What's happening?
ozjohn replied to azda's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Correction excise duty is levied at the point of manufacture by the country where the goods are produced whereas customs duty is levied on the importation the goods. of which both are passed on to the consumer. I think I've had enough of tax. -

Two countries with differences in the way GST/VAT is applied. In Australia now it has a tariff aspect to it for personal imports. Another difference is in NZ where there is no GST/VAT refund at airports etc. when taking goods out of the country as there is in the UK (out of the EU) and Australia (out of Australia) The main tariff on commercial imports into Australia is the WTO rate. STILL NO COMMENT ON THE BORDER ISSUES? PS it's excise on alcohol , gasoline etc. -

Firstly let's be clear what we are talking about. For goods imported for personal consumption In Oz a 10% GST is imposed on imported goods coming in to Australia.. The regulations changed in July 2018 after lobbying by retail companies in Australia where goods imported by private persons were GST free up to $1000 in value. You can probably still get some stuff through by mail from private sellers but run the risk of them being intercepted by customs. If it is through Ebay/PayPal the 10% GST is levied and ends up as consolidated revenue from Australian customs formally HM Customs. Amazon stopped selling to Australia from amazon. com and amazon.co.uk but they setup their own company in Australia where they levy the 10% GST on sales . Therefore it's now a tariff as well as an internal tax on goods and services both under the guise of GST. The only concession is when you come back from overseas with the goods in your procession the first $800 is GST free. However this has made duty free in Australia less useful than before with the exception of booze which attracts excise as well Tobacco is almost banned in Australia where you can only bring 1 packet of 25 cigarettes with out paying the excise and GST the excise on tobacco in Australia is very high. A packet of 25 cigarettes is about $30. It seems to be different for the UK where it seems VAT is levied inside the UK while duty is imposed on good coming from overseas countries outside the EU zone i.e. Australia. All of this has no relevance to this thread which was started with the ABC post on Norway Sweden customs and the overstated customs issues between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland in the event of a hard Brexit. Personally I think the Irish Republic's objections to a hard border stem more from the economic loss they would incur from the loss of sales to the UK rather than the assertion it may stir up the troubles again. Given the Irish Republics policy for a united Ireland I don't think this would worry them too much as they only paid lip service when trying to resolve the troubles in the past. There is also the suspicion that the EU is supporting the Irish claim to make things as difficult as they can as they know it is unacceptable to the UK to stay tied to the EU customs zone or split off part of the UK to the EU customs zone after Brexit which would also enhance the Irish Republic's territorial ambitions regarding North Ireland. -

VAT & GST are different from purchase tax as it imposed at each time the service is rendered and passed down the le to the final user. If I purchase a coin from the UK from Australia I have to pay the GST even though the service was not conducted in Australia and probably the VAT even though that is probably retained by the vendor as I believe VAT is not leveed on goods leaving the EU. Therefore in the case of overseas goods coming to Australia the GST acts like tariff . However the article from the ABC demonstrating that border control in Ireland is not as difficult as it is made out to be although seems to be a major sticking point in the Brexit divorce and all we get is a discussion on VAT GST rather than the issue in hand. -

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-11/what-norways-eu-border-says-about-a-post-brexit-world/10798094 An interesting article from the normally anti Brexit ABC. If Norway and Sweden can do it why not the UK and Ireland. -

Perhaps not the rarest of dates but I like it. IMO I think bronze coins with some toning look better than the mint lustre ones. 1863 penny. -

Expensive way to buy gold. I can always remember Henry Sandon of Antiques Road Show's view on limited editions - they invariably fail to keep their value or at best do not perform as the same amount of the issue is always there to satisfy the potential market. A limited edition of 75 may be different but very few people would be willing to cough up over 8000 quid for an oz. of gold. -

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/02/04/pay-39bn-brexit-bill-put-uks-future-eu-relationship-peril-brussels/ Article from the London Daily Telegraph. Perhaps with threats such as this a second referendum may not be such a bad idea after all. I cannot see such threats enhancing the remain case. As stated before working with the EU if the UK decided to stay would be difficult. -
London coin Company

Sorry my mistake to relate London Coins to the London Coin Company. I still maintain that the London Coin Company is compromised as they are both professional graders and sellers of coins they have graded. -

Sword, I appreciate your comments and agree with them as I think everyone is entitled to their say. However when ever I have commented on this subject I receive a tirade of leftist comment from a certain quarter and as a result feel that I am entitled to respond. As I say IMO the left is of the opinion that their view is the only view anyone who does not agree with them is stupid and were mislead also in the reply we are referring to it was filled with irrelevant information on the subject also the author suggested that the no case should have been explained to the people .where in fact both the no and yes cases should have been fairly presented for the electorate to make up its mind. The author is entitled to his view but don't belittle every one elses'. I also suggested that the electorate are a lot smarter than the author gives them credit for.. This was IMO the author using the tactics of the left to progress his point of view. The author has in many cases shown where his political views reside which seems to be some what left of the labor party -

The arguments for BOTH leaving should have been fully discussed not just one as you suggest. The electorate is a lot smarter than people give them credit for. A typical leftie ploy to brand your opponents as stupid if they do not agree with its agenda . The rest of your post is mostly irrelevant clap trap. The only thing it shows of relevance is the UK contribution to the EU budget and given the size of the UK economy is still a substantial amount of money. No figures just the normal miss information supplied by the left which is intended to mislead. Fake news perhaps. The best way to mislead is by waffle, belittling your political opponents and finally graphs and pie charts with no scales. The normal tactics of the left -

Well said compared with the noise and personal abuse that seems to come from some quarters. Typical leftie nonsense. Ignore the facts. Bring in every spurious argument that has no relevance to the subject in hand and then think they are champions of the people who are in truth well down in their list of priorities compared with their political agenda. Sometimes observing from a distance leads to clearer thinking something which seems to be lacking. I wish the good ship UK well but I fear it will end in tears. -

Why, you have had your referendum the people spoke. It's up to Parliament to implement it That's the job they are paid for. Probably a reasonable chance another referendum will produce a similar result especially after the way the EU has treated the UK over Brexit or do you keep on having referendums until it produces the result Parliament wants? I think I would be angry with the EU who have stymied every attempt to negotiate a separation also with May for throwing away her majority with the general election which seriously eroded any authority in negotiating with the EU who finally handed May a set of demands for the separation where May has been bludgeoned by the EU into accepting. GBP 36 B cost with out any guarantee of a trade deal or true separation from the EU. From here a no deal looks a much better option. Maybe some disruption but WTO trading is not so bad and you can also adjust the value of the pound to compensate for increased tarrifs and reduce company tax to attract business to the UK. As for no meds ( in OZ most of these come from India now days), truck mayhem on the M20, travelling to Europe. Well I don't have any trouble on an Australian passport and in any case if there were any reprisals from Europe it's a two edged sword which would hurt the EU just a hard perhaps harder as so many EU citizens live and work in the UK also the UK's unemployment is much less than most of the EU's 5% against France's 9% and much higher than elsewhere with perhaps the exception of Germany. That's why the UK attracts so many people from Europe I'm sure these can be managed with a little planning in the event of a no deal. You have had two years to prepare for this event which should have been put in place immediately after the referendum rather than waiting until the last moment further weakening your position. I guess in conclusion it's possible the May government was never serious in implementing the results of the referendum and kept on coming up with feeble excuses for doing nothing to prepare the UK for a no deal. -

Just looking at the Daily Telegraph with Colbyn pushing for another referendum. What happens if you get the same result? Have a third referendum a forth until you get the result you want.A referendum is supposed to be a vehicle used infrequently to settle a matter of national importance where 1.. the result should be implemented and 2. the results are final. -

I find it strange that a leftie would quote Churchill a Lib then a Tory when it suits. In any case this is only an opinion as the UK has no written constitution. I think Churchill was referring to the general running of the country and response to a crisis etc. . This is different Brexit was in response to a direct question asked of the people which was no doubt a surprise to the pollies that it attracted a majority of votes. Too bad they have let the cat out of the bag and it is their responsibility to comply. -

The elected polies are supposed to support the wishes of the electorate not oppose them.. You had a referendum which was carried by a good majority (50% of the vote + 1 is a win) and the polies should respect the result not oppose it. If Tory do not deliver Brexit they will be booted out of office and Labor will form the next government. I'm not sure the Tories will survive and Labor will govern for a long time into the future. Maybe that's your wish but I think Corbyn will be a disaster for the UK.
