  1. Not a collector of Maundy coins myself but very nice coins indeed. A little while ago Sterling & Currency of Fremantle had several maundy sets for sale all housed in custom red leather cases similar in color and gold tooling to the RM proof cases. Not sure if these were official presentation cases but impressive nevertheless.
  2. Looks like a fake to me? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1877-SILVER-GOTHIC-FLORIN-EXTREMELY-RARE-NO-DIE-NUMBER-AND-NO-MAKERS-MARK/392206437139?hash=item5b51534b13:g:GY8AAOSwCVtcLjCn
  3. I've seen many alleged cleaning claims for coins shown on these forums but for the life of me I couldn't tell and would not comment unless I was certain ie scratch marks over the whole coin or a polished effect for non proof coins Maybe it's a 6th. sense. Having said that for a coin of more than 100 years of age I'd be surprised if it hadn't been cleaned at some time in its life.
  4. Had this one for a while. Not sure if it has been displayed before but it fits the bill as a toned coin. My own grading is Abt.UNC/MS61 any feedback would be appreciated. Has to be said when you are presented with a coin like this it will be a long time before you will find another unless you are very lucky.
  5. Call it what you like it is still an impression of the obverse on the reverse in this case which IMO is ghosting,. however slight. In this case it is quite distinct and obvious as an impression of the Queen's head on the reverse of the coin. Certainly not as deep as the later examples from the early George V series. That's all I have to say about the matter.
  6. Scotch mist? The impression of the obverse can be seen on the reverse. That's what they call ghosting IMO. The wear of the coin is irrelevant unless the image has been worn enough to hide the ghosting. In that case you wouldn't be able to detect ghosting as it would have worn away. Having said that I think we can agree it's a great coin and ghosting or not that' s how it left the mint all that time ago.
  7. Great coin. Don't know how they survive with full mint lustre for so long. As an observation it appears the RM issues with ghosting are apparent with this coin. I would be very happy to own this coin.
  8. The result of the re-election of May solves nothing probably makes a bad situation worse. May is PM trying to sell a Brexit that no one will buy. The 117 who voted against her are unlikely to support Brexit in its present form and if it goes for a vote in the House of Commons it will be rejected leaving the UK facing a general election. Perhaps May will want to abandon Brexit which I think was always her plan but it will leave the majority who voted for Brexit wanting to vote May out paving the way for a Labor government lead by that maniac Corbyn. What a gutless bunch of w####ers the Tory MPs have proved to be. Good luck to the good ship UK (Titanic?)
  9. Ghosting on the currency issue? Can't say I've seen that on Jubilee coins before.
  10. Being pushed around by the EU is not the same as being pushed out by the EU. Nobody said that the EU ever said thatThe whole point is the EU wants the UK to stay as leaving threatens the stability of the EU . Not because they love the Uk. I thought that was obvious right from the start.
  11. Someone needs to. From Australia you are looking like a weak country being pushed around by the EU mainly due to incompetent leadership by May who says one thing and then proceeds to do something else. When May said Brexit means Brexit her real agenda was staying in the EU at any cost. One thing that is obvious is the border between the UK and the Irish Republic is the business of the two countries NOT the EU. As for the divorce bill 29 B. Euros for what not even a trade deal, no guarantee of leaving and no input into the EU laws after "Brexit". The best deal possible? All you have is the crumbs off the table. Shame on you. I thought the UK had some pride.
  12. Ireland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Portugal suffered under the Euro which was really about the EU exerting its authority. Now they are trying to shaft the UK. Pekris2 makes a point regarding the size of the UK economy .The second largest in the EU and the 5th. largest in the world. Why can't the UK stand on its own two feet as many other economies do ? Your pollies are so weak and feeble and buckle under external pressure rather than representing the interests of the people who voted for them. In our papers there were stories about shortages of food medications , even candy bars to quote some UK reports because of congestion at the channel ports. Fake News? Misinformation abounds as pointed out by the Daily Telegraph the former boss of the ports pointed out that only a small amount of trade is conducted through these ports and the East Coast ports were much more important and carried much of the traffic. In any case any responsible government would have put contingency plans in place in response to these issues rather than using this as an excuse to cave in to the EU. Even Australia makes candy bars and would only be too glad to satisfy any shortage . As for meds when I look at the ones I am prescribed most of them come from India , not a EU member. WHAT about HP sauce which is made in Holland plenty here in Australia. I am sure EU based companies will want to continue their trade with one of their most important markets as will the UK with theirs. Most of this stuff is simply scaremongering picked up by our media without question.

Sorry Nick. Can these posts br transferred to another topic called Brexit.
  15. How can you abandon something you have applied for. A referendum, That's what we are going to do, apply to leave, gets difficult, Let's forget it. What a pathetic lot the UK pollies are. All the UK needs to do now is bend down and let everyone one the 27 members of the EU have a good kick and then crawl off in shame.
  16. A clean break you have a chance to make your own future. Accept May/EUs terms more of the same with no input to the rules that govern the EU a pretty poor result or abandon Brexit where you will ignore the will of the people. The Tory government will probably fall and you will end up with a Labor government led by that maniac Colbyn. Some choice Not to say we do not have our own problems here in Australia with the likely return to a Labor government lead by Shorten an ex Trade Union official who has been involved in various controversial actions during his time with the Australian Workers Union such as ghost members, selling out his members and non disclosure of election donations. In summary I think our problems pale into insignifance compared with yours.
  17. That's correct. However they were bestowed on Aboriginals who were of merit.
  18. Similar items were given to trusted Aboriginals in the colonial days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aboriginal_breastplate
  19. Sorry to intrude on books again. I think Blakeyboy is correct the UK does not have a constitution. Basically 50% +1 of the votes cast is a win for a referendum therefore 52/48% is a convincing win. In Australia we had a postal plebicite on same sex marriage which was carried by a similar amount. As it happens I did not agree with it but I have to accept that it was the will of the people as was the Brexit referendum result. If 30% of the electors could not be bothered to vote (as what happens at UK general elections) you only have your selves to blame. Having said that in Australia we had a formal referendum (50% + 1 of the votes plus a majority of States under our constitution} on getting rid of the monarchy which was not carried. Now the republicans are agitating for another referendum as they did not like the previous result. They like the Brexit referendum should accept the result and make sure the will of the people is carried out. If people do not understand this it's called Democracy .
  20. Don't blame me just answering Rob's comments.
  21. Although I do not live in the UK I have followed the Brexit debate with interest and convinced that leaving is the best choice for the UK. However leaving under the terms May has been given beggars belief. Leaving and putting the UK into a worse position than it is at the moment by having to accept all the EU rules without any input to the making of the rules, remaining in the customs union without any foreseeable end and virtue blackmail by France & Spain over fishing and Gibraltar. Why the border between the UK and Ireland is any business of the EU beats me and should be left entirely to the two countries to work it out. Is the border between Poland and Ukraine any business of the EU? The answer is no it is a long established border as is the UK Ireland border. Who ever thinks this is the "best" the UK can achieve has a very funny idea of best. At the moment a no deal exit seems to be the BEST option even though it may cause some disruption initially. The predictions of economic by the BOE seem to be based on miss information "Fake News" rather than fact after all the UK managed to exist as a successful country prior to signing the Treaty of Rome. The UK can trade with Europe under WTO rules and adjust the pound accordingly to maintain competitive pricing. The UK can also reduce company tax to counter companies who want to leave London for Frankfurt or Paris. In fact the UK company tax rates are less than both Germany or France s I think most will stay put given the prestige and worldwide reach that London has. Leaving an organization because you do not like it only to enter the same organization under worse conditions seems madness to me. The leavers have spoken at the referendum. I know some people think it was close and many did not vote but that is normal for UK politics but if it were a general election a 52/48% win would make any political party very happy. If there were to be another referendum what would this achieve as I think you would have to reapply for membership under much worse conditions such as being forced to use the Euro, joining the Schengen zone etc. I know not everyone will agree with the above but IMO this is the situation as I see it.
  22. It seems to me that Ebay is happy to support their sellers' attempts to defraud their buyers. I guess cavete emptor applies.
  23. This one looks like a fake to me although I am not a crown person. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNCIRCULATED-MS-1845-Victorian-crown/312331408109?hash=item48b86712ed:g:OjQAAOSwHrlb6yM0 Its not even offered as a reproduction. Assuming I'm correct this is a deliberate case of fraud.
  24. Ghosting, to a lesser extent can be seen on Edward bronze coins but is more pronounced on the George V 1911 - 1919 for both bronze and silver issues. Then very much reduced after 1919 until the end of the reign on bronze coins.
  25. Was this coin slabbed and If so what was the grading?
