  1. Ok check out this very cool video of Stephen Hill handling one: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LUpc9Xc7ZMA
  2. What I might do one day and this would be a fun challenge for me, but I reckon I could redesign a new online coin auction house taking what I see as the best features / business models from all the big houses and create a new user friendly / powerful coin dealer business. Then hand it over.... There are good and weak features from each coin site currently IMO..and I have some ideas that none use...
  3. I love my hobby - I've been accused of being a touch obsessed! People ask if I would make it my job and I always say never! this would kill it for me...I could never be a dealer.
  4. Interesting fact The only coins I have made a notable profit over a 3-7 year turnaround are those coins that I won at auction that were the highest amount ever paid for a coin of that example (albeit between 2-10kGBP). In every case I was criticised at the time of the sale..of course I'd done my homework knowing they were also just about the best example I could find in any previous sale of those coins...
  5. Ok my theory on the top end of town (say 50k plus) Big money can be made buying something listed as EF in a British auction, carry it to the US, slab it at say MS62-65 then give it to one of the big U.S. auction houses... Then watch and voila! Big profit. Oh yeah make sure it's a household name variety coin eg una and the lion or such...that means milled preferably gold. Definitely not hammered silver..remember the U.S. Market very often sells coins at the Million plus mark and some well known non US coins are heading there..
  6. From my experience you're in much safer hands with your buyer present at the auction and even better if you are on the phone to them during your lots. It's better from so many angles from assessing the coin in person to estimating its value to reading the room and bidding in person... Online you take more risks.
  7. Thanks MH interesting. You know I've been buying British coins for over a decade but never been to an auction in person in England it's always online. Of course presents a risk when buying coins. Images and descriptions can lie!
  8. Thanks MH - all Baldwins that makes sense as they were not pitted against each other hence Richards comments Also, was the "Roddy" in the room in fact RR? and, there was a David bidding on many of hammered lots - any chance you know who it was ? David Guest maybe?
  9. Does anyone know who Richard Bishop referred to in the auction as "the three wise men" 3 active bidders seated close together I think one was David?..another Roddy? (Roderick Richardson) Nick
  10. Problem is Rob I fall in love with certain coins from time to time. and it's the best I've seen S.2763. That and just sold half my collection in Spinks last auction. Yep silly I know. Btw Trattle?
  11. Rush of blood - won Lot334 the tower mint halfcrown ...?
  12. Tom I love that coin. To me it's all about handmade coins not machine made.. There are exceptions though I now almost exclusively deal with hammered coins.
  13. Bottom left my pick and the best ive seen. Crude crown shilling...vvnice
  14. I could definitely comment on these coins if they were a bit more English.. : )
  15. Not a proof, but a pattern.. IMHO this one - a George IV Pattern Cown. 1820. Dramatic, innovative design. Very modern look for the early 1800's..
  16. That poor coin has been brushed to buggery!
  17. Problem is that the hype from this collection will push all sort of boundaries leading to many buyers (IMHO) paying way too much even for the ordinary stuff (and there's some of that in this collection- unlike the Slaney 1) and will NEVER see a return on their investment.. Having said that, Spink typically grade and price conservatively...
  18. Since my focus is in hammered coins I too see enormous variation in the market - but for coins above VF grade. Remember Spink does not offer any pricing above this grade for that very reason I believe. There's not one EF price suggested for hammered coins in Spink. I do though linearly extrapolate for EF pricing...
  19. Complete agreement Tom. But it's the first port of call...
  20. Genuine including the obverse graffito
  21. My view is Spink creates the market prices. Sorry.
  22. Yes pretty please. That would get us close..
  23. Ok Spink has posted Slaney II collection. Been miserable all day.
  24. That's a really nice example Rob. Mines a slightly earlier Type - not nearly as pretty.. great history lesson BTW
