Yep, and that's become another factor for me ... balance. Even without being a date completist, or a micro-variety collector, milled silver until 1816 can look very samey - a splash of different colours and designs, history and intrigue keeps me going

Personally I avoided all non-circulation coins for a while (when I first started more serious collecting), i.e. proofs, Maundy, patterns, etc,, because at the time I kinda thought well if they haven't even been designed for circulation, there's not much difference between these and modern tat churned out by the RM, Westminster, et al. Plus, if no-one has ever even handled these coins, that diminishes their sense of history (social and otherwise). Perhaps my appreciation for numismatic items in general has expanded, since a do now possess some of each ... partly because avoiding such uncirculated items would deny me of appreciating some true works of art in at their very best Do others feel the same?

It's an 1823 Peter! Perhaps rarer than the rarer 1825 - Spink values it at VF 2,500 and EF £7,000. I would also say around VF based on the pics, but there is a big difference in value between NVF and GVF

They are simply driven by profit, like many companies ... I don't particularly blame them for taking his money, only a fool would think those coins merited slabbing after 2 minutes of research. Might do something for their reputation if they did though ...

I've now received the coin and given it a gentle wash, hopefully it will now be easier to ID? I think it's 'just' a scratch on the reverse, not a crack ...

Quite comical really! Very recently slabbed too ... they are up to about UIN 34210 at the moment. Funniest thing is, he probably cleaned it himself before getting it slabbed, thinking it might 'improve' it!

Today he played something I had never heard before (he often does), and it's the best vintage prog track - that I hadn't heard before - in a very long time! This band were formed out of Colloseum and other bands, and includes some seriously good musicians, including the legendary John Wetton on bass (later of Family and King Crimson). This one is top of the CGS charts, finest known out of 32 graded, it was graded 85. Not as nice as Nicks IMO, at least judging by the pics alone. ... and the CGS valuation? An astonishing £350, compared to a Spink 2015 value of £120 in UNC ....

Indeed they are Redd ... the half crown should be roughly 2.5 times the weight of the shillings - in those days (in fact for hundreds of years!) the silver content of the coins was relative (if not exactly equal) to their face value

Yes, I'm not convinced that that is a reliable indicator ... I remember some fakes having a 'line' from the King's mouth to the edge, a pretty sure fire indicator. With the BNTA not sharing the information we need, we really should be able to put something together on here.
