  1. There is a real and present danger to our hobby, for sure. If TPGs were a guarantee of authenticity that would be great, but they are not. I am inclined to carry out a few market tests, with experienced TPGs, auction houses and dealers. This is very undermining.
  2. In answer to The question i'd say because it's relatively cheap and an Icon of Victoria coinage. Perhaps The buyer is another Scott and does'nt have The 4 figures required to ever scratch a large itch. It is ugly though It must be a different mindset to mine, it might fill the gap but I would never want to look at it again! Each to his or her own!! Every keeper I have must be pleasing, and that includes some coins with obvious problems!
  3. I would rather have a replica than that, you wouldn't want to look at it on a regular basis would you? Just don't get it sometimes! It ticks zero boxes for me, but I kinda guess it could for a completionist who insisted on genuine coins ... I realise the mindset of a type collector like myself is going to be very different to that of a completionist ... mind you I will need a Gothic crown for my type collection!!!
  4. Why would ANYONE want this piece of poo at any cost more than scrap value? Some things baffle me! link
  5. Yes, keep voicing your honest opinions Dave, it's one of the things I like about this Forum!
  6. What did your message say Dave?
  7. Your unrecorded 3d ... I like it but must be strict and use my budget for milled for now ... are you starting to wonder whether BIN would have been better than auction? No idea how to grade it really, except 'high'
  8. To be fair, Dave, he's only saying the portrait is GEF. Shame it isn't the big crown though!Could do with higher resolution images, really. A lesser mark, but not excessively so, I'd have thought...not that I know anything of value about J1! What you want Dave is this...a genuine unrecorded obverse on this 1564 3d of Elizabeth! I spoke to Chris Comber and he concurs with my thoughts that this obverse was an unused (we think) die from 1561/62. The rusty die, unclogged bust, and Rose 5 supports this theory. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Unrecorded-Obverse-Elizabeth-I-1564-3d-Threepence-Bust-3F-Reverse-BCW-BA-h-/231504730087?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35e6c1d7e7 Also a very rare Bust 3F Cross-Crosslet Halfgroat scheduled for the weekend too! We Or certainly i don't buy On portrait alone. The attached Coin was graded as XF. And i don't see The ebay One being half a grade better I agree Dave, but XF sounds like an American grade for EF (is that right?) so might only be GVF in the UK? So difficult to grade hammered I think, I rely on eye appeal so much more. I prefer it to the CC coin you first posted either way, it has a nice 'balance'
  9. Re-post - surely these boxes don't even go for a tenth of that (I haven't checked!)?
  10. Optimistic?
  11. Whatever it actually is it scores 0/10 for eye appeal to me, I wouldn't give it house room!
  12. Here's one that sold for over £100 this evening, and doesn't even exist as a genuine date for the coin (except in proof, which this isn't): link
  13. Ummm ... that certainly highlights some differences in what you and I collect ...
  14. Peter that is incredibly kind and thoughtful of you, I will look out for the postie with eager anticipation as I know not what the package may contain!! You are a true gent who I would dearly like to meet one day! - I will bring the Cubans and malt
  15. Well I would class 'different numismatic designs from Celtic through to the present' as an area of focus ... I must admit I enjoy your posts of pics from your collection as they are often appealing examples of rarer designs / types, accompanied by a fascinating 'back story', relating to provenance or history
  16. Me, specialising...............in diversity The ultimate oxymoron. I'm guessing that Peter might mean that you collect 'specialist' varieties such as different moneyers for different mints for early hammered?? I'm interested though ... for your own personal collection what are your main focus areas Rob? As an aside, the word 'oxymoron' often amuses me, as people who don't know what it means sometimes have a slightly 'offended' reaction when one uses it
  17. I think any problem free Phil and Mary in Fine + with eye appeal (my MINIMUM criteria) are a silly price, one of the reasons I concentrate on a milled type collection. Likewise tin farthings.

Just the odd stupid question? Don't hold back because nobody will mind. In fact we all love all questions about coins! Bring it on

Hi Scotsman, and welcome to this great Forum! Your Godless florin looks to grade around Very Fine (VF), perhaps a little better on the reverse. It also looks as though it has been cleaned in the past (not a good thing!)
  20. Nice article Chris, spotted a couple of typos that will result in a detention I'm afraid!
  21. After a second glance, I wouldn't give it house room
  22. Of course, don't be so picky! The Rev then! The side we haven't seen yet!!! lol
