1710 Anne Sixpence on eBay
Paulus replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I agree. While I don't have that date I would not be interested given the lack of quality. Which is why I was amazed at the price, a low-mid grade AND unattractive ... but as people have said, it only takes 2 keen bidders! - and having just checked, there were only 2 bidders from £60 up -

Thanks John, and thanks for the Scottish shillings you sent me, very pleased with them -
Anyone know why this one is going for so much, Spink would suggest circa £100 in GF? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121066332094?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648

And going to that external site was a complete waste of fecking time . Your picture was much much smaller than you would even get here if you followed the advice I gave above. What's worse, I had to use the Goback button about 12 times before I could get back to here. What you need is advice on how to post the image to Photobucket with a link so it appears HERE without our having to leave this site. That's what Dave does, maybe he will explain how to do it? That's what I do too, simply click on the 'IMG code' entry the CTRL + 'v' or right-click paste in here, eh viola! And I tend to open different apps in separate browser windows, much easier -

Agree on the cleaning. On further thought, that probably brings the value down and makes it overpriced. I bought mine (Elizabeth I - Milled coinage; large bust, cross fourchèe, small rose, mm.star) at auction (many years ago) and it was graded at VF+then. While it is always hard to tell from a photo, I thought mine was just a bit better than the ebay one hence why I felt that one might be a VF. Maybe mine is conservatively graded. What do others think? Should it be graded under hammered standards, or early milled, or somewhere in between?! Could we see a pic of your Jaggy? -

I must admit I thought it better than VF, but very noticeably cleaned -

Sorry, photos only! And scans? lol, I am sure they will be permitted, and assistance will be forthcoming! -
Just in case potential contributors haven't seen this (Stuart and others?), this is a hopefully genuine appeal for assistance with a GALATA GUIDE TO HAMMERED And MILLED THREEPENNY PIECES 1551 - 1662 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251227396382&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNARL:GB:1123

Help with some hammered
Paulus replied to Fubar's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've been asked to describe and value some coins and a few are giving me some problems. This looks like it could be an Edward VI fine issue shilling from 1551-53 but why the curled and perfectly round edge. The only thing I can think of is that it's been mounted at some time but has this devalued it totally? It's 34.28mm in diameter but I have no weight. Any help much appreciated. Regards Kris Hi Fubar/Kris Looks like a shilling, mm y, Spink 2482. Someone else might be able to answer your rim question, but I don't think it would be through mounting ... It is very worn and that I think will determine it's value, somewhere in the range of £30-£50 would be my guess -

Well, there's a stroke of luck! How about thumbnails on a grid? I'd be happy to draw the grid... On second thoughts, division by denomination might suit most people here a little better. Seems to be a lot of denomination collectors here. Navigation is everything! I'm not sure how you lot would go with this or whether I've got a wrong idea. But I wondered, most coin sites I've been on are always arranged under Reign, then under Value, and finally in order of year oldest first. I could do most sites do. But then have it so that only one coin is listed for that year of that value. Ie Ed VII, Penny, 1903. And this coin shown would be the highest voted as being the best grade? Could then have a link or even click the image, and have it open a new page. Which has all uploaded coins, along with who uploaded it, how many votes and what its grade is believed to be? Something like that? Sounds perfect! -

That would be a great idea and source of information for people on here like myself. I'm a PHP web developer by job, but my problem is I'm absolutely terrible at any kind of design. If someone would for example draw a design of how it would/should look. Ie with what should be shown, and so on. I might be able to chuck something out in my commute travels between work and home. Just a possibility. I know years ago there was a site, web developers usually slag it off due to bag practises they teach, but they do teach you the basics and its free. I believe it was www.htmlgoodies.com also www.w3schools.com is quite good for learning basics. How would you determine if one is better than the other too? The design of Accumulator's site works for me! Perhaps we have a vote - or if that's a little too long-winded given the potential number of dates types and varieties involved, people could offer up what they consider to be a high grade example for exhibiting on the site, then someone could say 'I think mine is better', post the pics on here, and seek consensus if necessary as to whether the previously depicted example should be replaced? I think it would be fun, healthy competition and a great resource. -

Have you got one, or do you want one. I can't seem to find one listed anywhere...spink, freeman, peck? Am I missing a few pages? I'm possibly missing something, but the last ones were minted in 1936 ... weren't they?? -
Yes that's ridiculous, GF/NVF?

1861 Farthing on eBay
Paulus replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I expect you have a choice example already Peter, good news being you wont be bidding! I'll probably bid up to around £65 as it has great eye appeal for me, doubt that that will win it though! You might be suprised. However I'm aware of the US contingent buying a common coin from ColinCooke for a few £ and slabbing them. I buy raw whenever I can to pop straight into the cabinet/tray with MY description/grade. I can see increasingly that a slabbed coin will sell for more than un-slabbed, especially in the US, and ceteris paribus, of course ... what I don't get at all is how so many low value/low grade coins are being slabbed ... CGS charge £11.99 per coin minimum plus 2-way postage, anyone shed any light on the economic viability of getting a coin slabbed that is worth less than, say, £30?? -

Thanks again, I might have a dabble later! Everyone else, keep off!! You are being worryingly normal tonight Peter! If you had a sneaky lottery win that Mrs P didn't need to know about, and you negotiated £4k-ish for the 2005 HC with CC, would you go for it? I know you want one!! I am on line in Barbados.Don't tell Mrs Peter. I'm at a stage when I would prefer a true UNC ED7 rather than overpriced key dates.A type collector away from 1/4d's Good man, I won't tell her, she is in the kitchen at the mo fixing me a snack, so we should be ok One reason I prefer top grade types to a parade of dates is when you show people your collection, no non-numismatist is going to be wowed by a mid grade rare date or variety! What you mean you show them to other people Rarely and only after a CRB check!
