  1. Hi guys, thank you again for the kind comments on my site. I'm all for doing something like this, but have to say at the outset I don't have time to contribute to its production (family & business take most of my time). I'd naturally be happy to take responsibility for a denomination though, when things are up and running. I'm also happy that whoever produces it, can pinch any of my ideas or code. My photos look similar because I've standardised on a 500x500 format with a black (foam) background for the coin. Clicking on the photo brings up the larger hi-res version (which could be standardised at 1500 x 1500, or whatever was decided). By sticking to a standard size throughout you're simulating the 2 x 2 cutouts in a coin tray and it all looks neat in a browser. I agree with Dave, a front page cabinet view for each denomination, then a second page breakdown by, say, reign. The hosting/bandwidth shouldn't be a problem, even with thousands of images.
  2. That's a bit top heavy, I must admit. I paid £300 for my full lustre example a year or so ago. I noticed that the 1860 beaded border form the same seller only made £157. It had a fair amount of lustre but the reverse suffered from severe cabinet friction (i.e. it was worn), especially around Britannia's fingers.
  3. Sounds like a great idea. My site is really rough and ready behind the scenes, without even using CSS (style sheets). Given a bit more time I would have used these too, though.
  4. That's true, but it's not that often that a good penny collection comes to the market. The most recent example was the 'Edinburgh Collection' sold by Colin Cooke last year. Take a look at the March London Coins Catalogue... there's really nothing of interest penny-wise, apart from the 1909 2 + E. These coins in top condition just don't come along that often and the market reflects that. I missed out on two coins in Fiona's collection at what I regarded as top prices but, on reflection, think is only the true market value right now.
  5. You don't have to worry about me bidding as I already have a good example. This is a lovely coin (apart from the dandruff on the reverse photo!) and one I'm sure you'd always be pleased to own. I'm saying that, as someone who missed out on a couple from this collection and still hasn't go over it!
  6. I understand 'eyes glazing over' feeling, but if you rely on someone else, then every little change you want to make (new coin, better photo, correct error etc.) means contacting someone else to get it done. Over time I'm sure you'd more than make up for the the initial effort with the flexibility to make changes yourself within, literally, seconds. NIce site Pies.
  7. That's very kind of you Peckris & Pies. By all means take a look at my website (follow the link in my signature). Personally I think that nothing beats the flexibility and satisfaction of constructing something yourself, but I appreciate this is difficult if you have no technical knowledge. I was fortunate to have an IT background so it wasn't too difficult, but all the information you require is just a Google away. Essentially you need to either use either an off-the-shelf web building package or write the html yourself. All browsers allow you to view the html behind any website so if you find something you like just take a look at how it was written. Once you've produced the website it's worth buying a suitable domain name and taking a web hosting package. Sometimes these services can be purchased in combination. The total cost of my site (which is actually very basic), including the domain name (mycoincollection.co.uk) and hosting is about £100 per year.
  8. I hope this seller isn't intending to supply the actual coin pictured. He'd have to break into my vault and steal it first! Google images must be his friend.
  9. Mark is a very straight guy and I've picked up some of my favourite coins from him.
  10. That's a lovely example of the Gouby X! I totally agree with you regarding VR Court. As an aside, I've often wondered what he did with all the rare varieties he (or his helpers) picked out? He found 5 x 1903 open 3's, 6 x 1908 1* + C's, 2 x 1909 2 + E's, 37 x 1911 Gouby X's etc. Presumably he pulled them out and sold them off?
  11. I missed this thread first time around but am astounded that anyone could part with so much money, without doing even cursory research. 2 minutes on Google would have shown up the errors, particularly with the supposed 1/2d numerals! Incidentally I'd not heard of Teletrade but notice it states that only US or canadian citizens can use it!
  12. You should have said, as I have duplicates of a great many of the dates. Still at £1.99 you weren't done. Thanks for the offer Dave. To be honest, at £1.99, it was just a spur of the moment purchase.
  13. If you decide to sell any of those pennies be sure to let me know
  14. That's interesting to know as my collection is largely complete and I was thinking of banking it rather than spend £500 on insurance, you can buy a couple of good coins for that. Can you explain that a little more please! I'm just upgrading really now, all the major obtainable holes are filled. Really just things like the 1935 gold crown, the old 1920's cupro nickel bits, unconfirmed varieties ect which I don't expect to find for prices I can afford. I intend to sell my collection in about 7 years time and paying £500 a year for the next 7 year so that it can stand in the corner of my living room. I can think of better things to spend my money on. When you come to sell that open 3, do let me know!
  15. I can't help you with dates as I had a clear out of old catalogues and magazines many years ago (I now wish I'd kept a few!). By coincidence I bought this 1981 Coin Monthly on eBay today for the princely sum of £1.99 + postage. If the penny article is of interest I'll scan it.
  16. That's a nice F169 Gary! It's certainly better than the London Coins auction example, and the best I've seen. Nice open 3s too, but Gary1000 has pipped you! Especially that obverse, which must be GVF to NEF.
  17. Hi Gary, I only picked up the dated 1844 and the 'PENNEY' misspelt models, which I believe were yours. I had the chance to buy the all-silver model too, but missed out on that one. Really lovely coins! Your 1* (F164A) certainly puts mine to shame. I've never seen a better one. While on the subject of Edward VII, do you have better than F versions of the 1903, open 3, or the 1909 F169 (which Freeman has as R9, but is way rarer)? A fellow forum member has an NVF Open 3 and I'm sure a VF example appeared on eBay some time ago, but otherwise everything else seems to be low grade.
  18. If you have any more for sale...?
  19. Ebayer bronzepennycollector won it along with another. His name is Tony Crocker and any Penny collectors will know of him! I certainly know the name, but surely Colin Cooke sold his collection some years ago? Yes he did Steve but that only took a relatively short time for Tony to compile. It looks like he is possibly back into the groove? I see you bought his better F15 satin. I meant to bid but forgot so I was pleased that it went to another collector. Yes, picked up the F15 as it's better than my existing. Still kicking myself for not getting the F106 from 'Fiona'. It could be a long time before I find a better one. Right now I wish I'd gone into 4 figures as it was a beautiful example.

  21. Fortunately I have a very good Freeman 87 already, but it will be interesting to see!
  22. Ebayer bronzepennycollector won it along with another. Ok thanks! I wonder if he ever visits this forum? Well we don't know everyones ebay names here, i know a few but not everyone Just lost out on another one.... I was the underbidder at £950 on this F106. Shocked it went so high again!

  24. Another one of those times when, "you are bidding on the actual coin in the photograph", is a serious disincentive!
  25. Two fantastic discoveries, but... I appreciate that when these hoards are discovered the coins are all just laying loose, but you would imagine that as soon as someone archeologically qualified, or from a museum, arrives they would be handled with 'kid gloves'. Instead, photos of the coins in the media (e.g. the Bonhams picture) always seem to show them piled up on top of each other, presumably for effect. I'm not sure I would treat them that way if they were mine!
