They don't supply disks anymore but there's usually a small partition on a new laptop containing the original files loaded when bought. Accessed via pressing escape or some such before it loads. Unfortunately it means going back to how it was when it came from the shop so backups should be made first of anything you need to keep. Most of them allow you to make a set of disks in case the hard drive goes totally belly up. I tried WIndows 10 in beta a while ago and felt it was going to be a lot better than 8 or 8.1. It can be run like 7 or 8.1 with a bit of fiddling. I didn't keep it because it was still quite full of bugs at the time, i.e., it didn't let me use bluetooth on my laptop. The official release should be OK but I don't know about going back if you don't like it. You don't have to install it but they'll eventually stop support for 7 and then 8.1. I don't think WIndows 10 will update XP and I don't think it will be offered to users.

Remembering VE day for what it meant to my parents. For my father it meant an end to the fighting but he continued to serve for another 2 years. For my mother it meant an end to living in an occupied country as the enemy surrendered Norway rather than fight on fanatically. It also reminds me that my grandfather on this day 100 years ago was heavily engaged in the 2nd Battle of Ypres. He fought with the 4th Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps and when they were finally rested after fighting from the 7th to the 10th May 1915 out of a complement of about 600 they mustered 2 officers and 100 rank and file. I often wonder what he would think of today's world.

Made in the UK as a propaganda piece and a copy of the German item designed by Karl Goetz. The spelling of the month as May rather than Mai is a dead giveaway. A tenner at most at auction and that's with a good case and the leaflet that went with it.

This is my 1900. Inside the mouth looks rough as if filled with crud or the die is chipped. Maybe the mouth should be empty?

Fibreglass boards were usually greenish in colour and, from memory, I didn't see many until the 60s. All of the wartime and later (1950s) equipment I have uses paxolin for insulation. I've seen the NAAFI coins before in a past local auction sale. Not made with paper as the Wikipedia mentions but usually linen or canvas bonded. We get plastic milk and travel tokens all the time in mixed lots of coin. Nothing is new.

We used to do much the same thing around Hull and now the photographs are reminders of buildings and scenes that have disappeared.

Was your Yashica FXG? I was hankering after a Pentax ME super. It was a Yashica 230-AF. My son now has it because he's into retro stuff. I liked it because of the trap focus system but the motor drive could use up a roll of film pretty smartish. I have an Olympus OM-1 MD in the garage along with what is looking a lot like a collection of cameras from bellows to digital. Must have a clear out.

I sometimes feel that modern digital cameras devalue the art of photography. some of my most memorable shots were taken with a Halina Paulette and then with a small compact Canon QL25 until it got inundated with sea water. Next three cameras were Prakticas until I graduated to a Yashica, the last of the film cameras. I often think of the shots I missed while at sea but that's the region for memories and I have enough to jog the brain cells into action. Now I can keep my finger on the button and take a series without worrying about running out of film. Then pick the best, but that never happens and this PC is crammed full of failures.

Just kidding. Two kids growing to adulthood in the "Apple era" means that I have an idea of what iTunes is, unfortunately. Screams of "Dad! Daaaad! I've lost all the music on my iPhone, (iPad, whatever)" means I got to be a bit of an expert in recovery. or not. Most of the music on my phone and/or computers, laptop,s etc., is digitised from original vinyl. Can't beat the sound from an old valve amplifier.

Three black cats at the moment. All strays. The one in the attached picture is Ra and now rapidly turning grey. The others are an old lady who seems to be hanging on for the hell of it and a Norwegian forest cat the size of a medium sized dog. Over the years we've had about a dozen cats and a Dulux dog. Always a comfort and always good for a laugh.

I believe this was issued in commemoration of the Relief of Mafeking during the Boer War of 1899 to 1903. No military connection but the sort of civilian medallion sold quite commonly in the early 20th Century. It probably had a patriotic red, white and blue ribbon. Similar items were produced for royal weddings, funeral, coronations, etc. Not limited to medals this sort of commemorative would also include, tins, flags, tie pins, coins, etc.
