Nutler, The coin you have is a "post Colonial" issue of a Liberty and Security Token Half Penny. It is referred too as a pre-Federal issue in the guide book. There are nine (9) differant varieties of the coin, and it comes in dated and un-dated versions. Yours is what is known as the "Birmingham edge" variety. In fine condition, the coin has a retail value of $100 to $170 US$. Regards, Bob C.

I pulled up a photo of a "real" Roman I from the Colin Cooke website, and it verified what you have stated about the I being closer to the 8. Hi, Attached are 2 photos of an 1843 Farthing. In the first picture it appears to be a Roman I for 1, but in the second photo, at a higher magnification it looks more like a re-engraved 1. Rob, You are correct about the Bronze 8 over 6 being slightly differant. I just looked in my Gouby book, and it shows the upper partial loop in the upper half of the 8. I had never noticed that before, as being differant. The pic in Gouby's book is not good enough to make a usuable copy for the forum, or I would copy it. The 1862 8 over 6 is listed as "BP-1862D by Gouby. Bob C.

Hi, The pic you have provided does not appear to the the 8 over 6. I have attached a closeup of the 8 over 6 Half Crown (1848) for reference. The 1862 overdate looks the same. You can clearly see the left side of the 6 connecting the top and bottom of the left side of the 8. I hope this helps. Bob C.

Gary, I verified your statement on the mintage of the 1946 3d (from Peck), and it is correct! Does this mean that the actual mintage of 3d's dated 1946 is only 77,591 total? The quantity shown in most references is 620,734, and the above mintage firgure is 1/8th of that. Peck states that the 1946 has a "R" (rare) designation. If the mintage of 77,591 is correct, I am in great shape...I have two (2) rolls of them that I have had for a long time! Regards, Bob C.

It sounds like this seller has decided, on his own, that a dipped coin will sell better. Whether it helped or not, could only be determined if you could see the coin prior to dipping. If it tones back exactly the same, would be determined by a lot of factors, not the least of which is environment. DG43, It sounds like you are familier with this seller's technique, so you are in a better position to advise as to his tactics. I do not know him. BTW... Macro allows for closer and more distinctive pic's to be taken, thus you get a better view of the actual coin surface. Bob C.

From the reverse of the coin, their are small streaks that would indicate the coin has been "dipped." This type of cleaning does not diminish the coin nearly as bad as buffing, scrubbing, etc. Even though it has been cleaned, it is still a nice coin. It is also upright of the seller to advise you of the cleaning. Bob C.

Chris, you re right...the Crown is valued at one U.S. Dollar, but there is no silver in the 5 Crown past 1992. The 1993 is copper nickle. Regards, Bob C.

Red, Chris, I bought the 1849 from Chris. I can't see any doubling of the 1 on the coin. The 4 does not have any doubling either. I have two other 1849's and neither of them have any doubling of the 1 or 4. All three of my 1949's are not better than VG-F, so if they were better coins (sharper dates), something might have shown up. Red, when you have time, post a pic of your 1860/59, I have never seen one. Bob C.

Huss, My refernce doesn't show any patterns like that after 1951. Could it be Bronze instead of gold? There is one that looks just like this coin...see below. KM-145 1953 50 Centimes Bronze, 22,930,000 minted. Not sure if this helps. Bob C.
