Normally when an error occurs, the mint would overstrike the error with the correct letter. To me from what i'm seeing in both the coin i've now purchased and the Bloomsbury coin is that the serif of the 1st leg curves upwards and the curve of the 2nd legs both extend to high. I enlarged the Bloomsbury and hightlighted it a little for my own viewing purposes but the image still wasn't great. At the minute i'm thinking it's about a 50/50 chance that it could be. Some overstrikes are very difficult to see unless you have a microscope, but when i spotted it yesterday it just didn't look right, pictures can also be very deceptive, so i guess we're just going to have to sit back and wait. I'm hoping it'll be here for the weekend though and we can have a browse together. Meanwhile, here's the Bloomsbury, crap picture, but try if you can and compare the 1st B, and the curve from the bottom of the B, also if you look at the centre of my 1866 and compare the 2 centre lines of the 1st B and the alleged B, to me they both look the same, then compare the Rs in the rest of the legend, they don't seem the same as that alleged R or B. Anyhow, i might be clutching at straws right now. P.s, if it is B/R or R/B then its BB surely

Ok, i did a little cropping and enlarging of the Bloomsbury coin and 2 things that seem to looks similar to the one i'm talking about here is the serif of the 1st leg seems to curve round the same and the 2nd leg, where the R finishes seems high, if you look at the picture i uploaded with the arrows, 2 parts of the Bloomsbury looks similar to this one.. We shall wait and see when it arrives............ . I hate waitin

Yup See it now, but Not great magnified, will just have to wait until it arrives and get it under the usb microscope me thinks, although from what i can See, bloomsburys looks different

No, i found this One in switzerland. I've Went in for the kill and purchased it because it was so annoying me, plus it was'nt expensive, that R or B is killing me lol

Ok here's another picture, this time i've added 3 arrows. The top arrow pointing down is where the tip of the R ends. The arrow inside is where i was thinking it was a B, the serif is rounded going into the 2nd leg like a curve of a B. The 3rd horizontal arrow is just where the leg of the R is just completely wrong and fat, hence these things combined was where my conclusion came from. The 2nd leg of the R looks as though it's been added later and was made an arse of.

Maybe some of you gents have seen a BBRITANNIAR 1866 Shilling, so i was wondering if this could possibly be one, the 2nd R or B looks strange, the curve of the leg goes quite high and looks as though it's joined at the bottom like a B. I've only downloaded the gallery picture, cropped and enlarged etc for opinions, see what you think. Just looking at the enlarged picture, the strike across the 1st leg at the bottom curves upwards Any takers?

The only last piece of advice i would give, is, never be afraid to ask a question here on the forum, no matter how trivial you think it might be, better to ask than not to, we were'nt born collectors, and advice is always freely avaliable buy some very knowledgable people here.

Looks like the current eBay generation are the 'dipping' generation. I hope it doesn't become the expected 'norm'. I had a couple of emails from our other dipping friend Classic British Coins, but if you now look at a couple of auctions he has on he's obviously taken some friendly advice and stopped dipping his and describing them a little nearer the condition, he's actually called one EDGY would you believe.

2 books i would recommend is Michael Goubys Bronze pennies for dates and rarities, an excellent book, you can order direct from his website, cost is 50 quid but definately worth the money, this is for PENNIES only. The other for general coins spread over many years is the Spink book, but you should wait a month or so before buying as the 2011 edition is due out. Its always better to read first and perhaps look at various gradings and how those are graded, as i said, a high graded coin doesn't always come cheap, especially bun head victoria pennies and the rarities that come with those bunheads. Maybe take a look also at colin cookes website, they are selling some pennies from one of our members son James workman, there is a link here in the forum under lots of british coins topic i think. Welcome boomstick. I think firstly you need to know what types of coins you want to collect, Gold, Silver or Bronze, or perhaps a mix of all. Also what grade you would like to collect these in, coin values will differ greatly at the grade you collect and storage will differ to what type of coins you will collect. Some coins come in graded plastic holders and so these have a different box to house those in. personally i collect pennies mostly, i put those in coin capsules with a foam ring and am looking for a good case to display those in. Attached is a case i'm looking at buying for storing the capsules in. Just one last thing, it might be better to read a few books first on the subject as knowledge is power as they say

Link Fantastic coin, but as you say Beebman, the starting bid is perhaps too highly pitched. He's probably hoping to pique someone's interest sufficient to make the only bid at that level. Mind, you don't often see pennies before about 1880 in that good a state. Pretty much full lustre. Very desirable specimen. I would'nt have said FULL LUSTRE as the legends have better lustre as the land and bust, so for me it would be about 30-40% lustrious, quite a high start price though, maybe pricing himself out of a sale at that

Spink is quite a general book, i would say 80% of people go by the prices inside the book. A dealer for example would sell at Spink prices but would want to buy at 50% of those prices. I think the only time people actually bid to book is when a coin is really rare such as 1905 Shilllings or 1854 shilling/sixpences etc. Collectiing varieties is quite a specialist theme because not everyone does so, you may have bought a coin because of its rarity value in whatever denomination you collect, but for a general collector it wouldn't matter if its 6 over 9 or so and so mint etc. ESC will always be your best bet for silver as its more of a specialist book for silver,unfortunately it doesn't give prices, just rarity levels, hence Spink do make some huge prices for more common coins for some reason and for others we collectors would consider rarer, they have crappy book prices, but as i said, most people tend to go by Spink for the price value as not everyone has an ESC plus ESC gives no values.

He sold that 1835 Shilling for 285 GBP. I seriously wonder what people are thinking buying a coin that quite plain and clearly has been dipped/cleaned/shotblasted or whatever he's done to it.
